Colorful Apple TV billboard ads are pleasingly old school

It's certainly eye-catching.

If any more proof was needed that Apple TV is no longer being considered a “hobby,” check out the massive new billboard ad campaign that has been rolling out for the new fourth-generation Apple TV refresh.

Cleverly playing on a color bars motif which references both the old school Apple logo (with colors fastidiously picked out by Steve Jobs, to boot!) and a television test pattern, the billboards can be seen in both landscape and portrait orientation around the U.S.

The same color test pattern also introduces the video ads for Apple TV, adding consistency to the campaign.

Apple’s last big billboard campaign — called “Shot on iPhone” and depicting, you guessed it, photos shot using Apple’s handset — was described by a Cannes panel of judges as an advertising “game changer.” I’m not sure that the “color bars” campaign is quite so groundbreaking, but it’s definitely eye-catching.

The Apple TV refresh began shipping around one month ago. You can check out our review of it here.
