Best List: Retro Alarm Clock Radio by Electrohome

Experts say you need to minimize distraction from your smartphones and tablets at night, so I’ve started leaving my iPhone charging in the kitchen. Instead, I now wake up to NPR thanks to this gorgeously retro alarm clock radio from Electrohome.

It’s got everything you need to get you up at the right time, plus a host of features that make it the only alarm clock you’ll ever need.

Plug it in and it already knows the time — simply adjust to your time zone and you’re ready go to. There are two alarms that get backed up with a battery you drop into the bottom of the clock itself, making sure you never miss your wake-up call, even when the power goes out.

You’ll wake up gradually, too, as the two “bells” on the clock’s top light up slowly, making sure you’re not flooded with light when you’re tired. They function as a motion-controlled night light as well as the snooze function — simply wave your hand near them to light them up gently so you won’t trip over anything when you get up in the middle of the night for a glass of water.

Electrohome’s retro alarm clock looks both old-school and high-tech sitting on my nightstand, and I’ve really enjoyed not feeling compelled to check Facebook when I really just want to know the time.
