Luke Skywalker is earnest, fiercely serious and seems to lack the sense of humor of, say, Han Solo.
But the force behind Skywalker, actor Mark Hamill, is as funny as Jabba the Hutt is fat.
Hamill’s mark on comedy is in his writings to fans on old Star Wars trading cards. He likes to quickly craft a funny sentence to go with the scene on the card, followed by an artfully penned signature.
In a card titled The Search for Vader, Hamill writes: “This Vader guy is a loser . . . Hope he doesn’t have kids!”
A sampling of autographed guards was shared on the visual storytelling website, Imgur by a user named raggedrabbit.
In one card where young Luke stands beside a very tall droid, Hamill writes: “World Largest Bong for Sale. Call Luke: 555-Weed.”
Clearly Hamill’s humor has a Dark Side, to which he explained recently on Twitter:
Of course, serious movie fans are familiar with Hamill’s willingness to send up his own status in movie history. In the movie Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, he appears as a character named Cock-Knocker who gets in a “bong saber” duel with the two main characters.
“Don’t f— with the Jedi Master, son,” he declares. But when a fake hand prop is cut off during the duel, he looks into the camera to say, “Not again.”
