Those of us old-school instant messaging warriors remember the day when Yahoo! Messenger was the king of the IM clients. The purple search giant is hoping that day may well be at hand again.

A new report suggests that Yahoo might announced a beautifully designed and extremely versatile cross-platform messaging app tomorrow.

According to sources talking to Re/Code, Yahoo is poised to announce a new mobile app tomorrow or Thursday at a media event in New York.

There aren’t a lot of details, despite an active rumor mill surrounding the product. Although rumors suggest Yahoo’s app may well be a new IM app, Re/Code reports the only thing they can directly confirm is that it’s a mobile announcement:

According to sources, Yahoo is holding an event in New York midweek to unveil a new consumer product (the Re/code invite is apparently lost in the mail!). While it’s not clear what that product might be, sources said it was mobile in focus. That could mean a redo of its Tumblr or Flickr app, perhaps in the manner that Google’s YouTube just unveiled at VidCon with new tools for video editing.

Yahoo’s mobile app design is top notch. Count me in the camp that hopes this is a better designed and more forward thinking messaging app: Yahoo’s attempt to compete with the likes of Snapchat, iMessage, and Facebook Messenger. That would be intriguing.
