Microsoft has dropped its new Skype for Mac 7.0 update, which is now available as a free download. Requiring OS X 10.9 Mavericks or later, the update brings the popular voice and video calling service in line with the appearance of Skype’s iOS app for iPhone and iPad.

Alongside the new mobile-inspired design is an added side-by-side interface which lets users make calls, send instant messages, share files without having to switch between multiple screens.

The update also boasts support for large emoticons, the possibility of changing group chat pictures, support for limited instant message formatting, and the ability to make your Favorites conversations “roam” and sync on supported platforms, alongside the usual bug fixes you’d expect.

Particularly if you tend to exchange photos, documents and other files while you’re speaking to people, this is a particularly great Skype update thanks to the added ability to easily drop these into chat sessions.
