‘Mate In 1’ — Chess Puzzles For People Short On Time

Love chess, but don’t have the time or the sticking power to play a whole game? Then you should probably take a look at the $1 Mate in 1 Puzzle app, newly updated for iOS 7 and ready to puzzle your brain with something a little more satisfying that an other round of QuizUp.

The app presents you with a chess game that’s one move away from a forced mate. Your mission, should you decide to accept it, “is to finish each game by forcing a checkmate in 1 move.”

The puzzles start off easy but progress to tricky pretty quickly, and you can always skip ahead if the early puzzles seem too simple for you. There’s a choice of different sets of chess pieces, and if mating in one move is too easy for you, there are more apps which let you mate in two moves and so on, up to 4+ moves.

I’d prefer it if the developer had made just one app with on-app purchases for the different games, as otherwise you have to clutter up three extra spots on your home screen, but still. The game is great, and perfect for twisting your brain a little when you have a spare moment.
