Call it a stocking filler if you want, but Digitimes has one last (?) rumor to take us out of 2013: that Apple is planning to release a 12.9-inch tablet in October 2014, aimed at the North American educational market.

The rumors allegedly come from “sources from the upstream supply chain”.

According to the report, Apple had been considering adopting either 12.9- or 13.3-inch panels, although recent suggestions indicate that the 12.9-inch has a better chance of being picked as the finished model.

Apple’s large-size tablet will reportedly be manufactured by Quanta Computer, and is being viewed in terms of performance as a substitute for the 11-inch MacBook Air.

Apple is also rumored to be planning a larger size iPhone for May 2014, using a 20nm processor manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

To be fair, Digitimes is not the first time we have heard the larger-size iPad rumor. In May this year we reported on the “iPad Maxi” story — while in July the Wall Street Journal suggested that Apple is prototyping larger versions of both the iPad and iPhone.
