BBM Channels, the latest addition to BlackBerry’s popular messaging platform, which made its public debut earlier today after more than six months in beta, is coming to Android and iOS “in the coming months.”

BBM Channels has already become pretty popular on BlackBerry devices, even though it’s only been available as a beta up until today. It’s billed as a “social networking feature” by BlackBerry, allowing BBM users to share whatever they choose beyond their friendship circle.

In some ways, it’s a little like Twitter. You can create or join a Channel based on a particular interest and other BBM users can then join it and post their own messages. Bands, artists, businesses, and brands can also have their own channels that will allow them to interact with fans and customers.

Channels is now available to all BBM users with a BlackBerry smartphone, and a spokeswoman for the Canadian smartphone company says the feature will also be available inside the BBM apps for Android and iOS “in the coming months,” The Next Web reports.
