BlackBerry has today updated its new BBM app for iPhone, addressing an issue that caused it to crash under Apple’s latest iOS 7.0.3 firmware. The update also brings a number of new features, including contact categories and list sorting and filtering in BBM Groups.

Just days after BBM made its much-anticipated debut on the iPhone, Apple rolled out a new iOS update that caused it to become unstable. BlackBerry blamed one of the fonts it was using in its app, which is no longer supported by Apple. There was a workaround that prevented the app from crashing, but the BBM 1.0.2 update should fix the problem once and for all.

That’s not all it will do. This release also adds contact categories, allowing you to separate groups of contacts into categories like family, friends, and colleagues. It also adds the ability to sort and filter lists in BBM Groups.

BBM for iPhone is free, and you can download it now from the App Store. You may have to wait in line to gain access to the app if you haven’t already registered. There was a little trick that allowed users to bypass this, but it’s currently unclear whether BlackBerry patched that with this update. Let us know in the comments if you find out.
