The success of the LifeProof cases are really nothing short of a marketing phenomenon — one that’s predictably spawned a parade of imitators. This isn’t a bad thing though, as most of the newcomers are priced more competitively than the $80 and $90 LifeProof pair.
But the latest challenger — Outdoor Tech’s rubberized Safe5 — is just $50, miles below pretty much anyone else.
It’s got an IPX7 waterproof rating, which means it’s fully submersible to one meter underwater; that’s not quite as good as the LifeProof cases (2m) or the $70 Griffin Survivor + Cataylst (3m) — but what are you anyway, a Navy SEAL? Also, you’re not going to get the accessory compatibility that comes with a LifeProof setup.
Still, if you’re not into all the fancy extras, aren’t a dolphin and just need a waterproof iPhone 5 case, the Safe5 definitely makes a compelling, $20-$40 argument.
