You know what everyone should do if they have an Apple TV? Install Plex, the incredible media server that can stream any digital media file on your Mac to your Apple TV, no jailbreak required.

I’m dead serious: Plex is awesome, and installing it on my Mac has been a total game changer in regards to the way I watch media in my own house. From my Apple TV, my MacBook Air, my iPad or my iPhone, I can stream my entire video library anywhere with no hassle.

The only problem is that while Plex is free on the Mac, the app will cost you $4.99 normally. It’s worth it, but still enough of a barrier to entry that my girlfriend, for example, hasn’t bought it. But for a limited time, you can get Plex for iPhone and iPad for just $1.99.

If you haven’t installed Plex, it’s a little tricky getting it working with an Apple TV, but it’s worth it. You can find a good how-to guide here.

Using PLEX is a no-brainer, but why the hell does Apple make it so difficult to install on AppleTV (meaning why should it be tricky). It takes a just a few seconds to put on a Roku box since it’s a common channel. PLEX should be an essential for any streaming box because it’s that good. It’s the only reason I don’t own an AppleTV because PLEX wasn’t really supported by Apple which I find ridiculous. You could install PLEX on AppleTV and Apple could break it if it felt like doing so. Apple really needs to pick up the pace with AppleTV to be at least on par with the Roku 3 which is awesome.

AirVideo does the same thing thru AirPlay, directly from the app, without hassle and fuss.
