German retail chain Media Markt has added a 128GB iPhone 5 model to its inventory, sparking speculation that Apple could be planning to double the handset’s maximum internal storage at its iPhone event on September 10. The iPhone 5 is currently available in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB variants, but a 128GB model is sure to appeal to plenty of customers.
Apple increased the iPad’s maximum storage to 128GB earlier this year, providing customers with more room for music, movies, apps, and games. With most iOS devices now boasting Retina displays, the size of iOS titles in particular — especially games — are becoming larger, so there will surely be lots of demand for more storage.
But it seems unlikely Apple would introduce a 128GB iPhone 5 and upgrade an existing product while unveiling its successor at the same time. Macerkopf.de, which first spotted the listing, suggests it could be a placeholder for the new iPhone 5S instead, and that certainly seems more plausible.
Either way, we’ll have to wait until next month to find out. It’s unclear how Media Markt obtained information about upcoming Apple devices, so take this with a pinch of salt for now.
