Your Next Printer Could Be Made Of Cardboard

A printer is already pretty much disposable, thanks to the environmentally hateful practices of manufacturers; it’s almost cheaper to buy a whole new printer than it is to pony up for replacement ink. So why not go the whole way and make the printer out of cardboard? That’s the idea behind Samsung’s concept designs, which take the metal and plastic guts of the printer and put them — literally — into a cardboard box.

printer-origamiThe concepts, shown at the 2013 International Design Excellence Awards, have some less useful models in the lineup. For instance one has interchangeable panels so you can customize its case. I guess that if you’re forced to have a printer then it might be nice to fancy it up a little, but still.

Speaking of printers and iOS devices (well, of printers at least), I’m having a great time with the little Canon Selphy CP900, which spits out dye-based 6×4 prints that are just like the ones you used to get back from the lab, only better because they don’t have color casts or other crap that came from commercially-produced prints in the olden days. It’s also tiny, works wirelessly with a (crappy) iPhone and iPad app, and works really well with Lightroom on the Mac. If anyone wants a review of this relatively old machine, let me know and I’ll write one up.
