Video games are often praised right out of the gate due to their amazing graphical fidelity and smooth animation. A less visible but equally important feature of any game, especially in the realm of first-person shooters, is the control scheme.

DeNA / Mobage’s The Drowning, out today as a universal iOS app, has seemingly nailed both of these things in a game that’s taking the iOS gaming world by storm. And perhaps shotgun.

Just take a look at this launch trailer with in-game footage to get a sense of how gorgeous this thing is.

Developed by Scattered Entertainment, The Drowning was created by a host of veteran game developers who have been behind some of the hottest games on any platform, including Ben Cousins, previously the executive producer on games like Battlefield 1943, Battlefield Bad Company, and Command & Conquer Tiberium Alliances.

The Drowning’s control scheme has been rethought from the ground up, as it ditches the virtual dual analog stick controls (finally!) for a scheme that’s equal parts tapping, holding, and swiping, making this perhaps the best touch-screen FPS ever. Of course, we’ll have a full review up soon.

Until then, go grab The Drowning—it’s free to play and ever so pretty. And it has zombies, so, win-win.
