DIY iCable Tidy Promotes Home Harmony

There are several truths about cables:

  1. Despite having a rats nest of cables in the back of your closet, you can never find the one you actually want.
  2. All cables – ALL OF THEM – are self-tangling. And “tangle-free” cables are the worst.
  3. Try as you might, you have never managed to come up with a good way to organize cables and have them look good.

This is one reason I like the look of Brit Morin’s cool DIY project. The other reason is that it’s not just for cables but for several other things I have too many of: sunglasses, neckties, straps (just kidding about the neckties).

Yee-haw! Ride ’em, cowboy.

To make your own super-cool cable tidy, just grab an old piece of wood, drill a hole in each end, snip the ends off a bungee cord and thread them through the new holes. Brit totally cowboys the job by using a regular paper stapler to “secure” the cords to the back of the wood, and then mounting the thing on the wall using picture hooks: If you’re not going to mount the board flush on the wall, why not just tie knots in the bungee?

Or better, put a couple of hooks into the wall (using proper plastic wall plugs) and string the bungee between them. It’ll look fantastic with your white iCables hanging from it, and can be stretched to fit bulkier items like the headphones in the photo.

Whatever you choose, you have to admit this is a pretty neat little DIY project. Better still, if you choose to make the whole set then you can justify leaving your cables out in full view by making a rack for your significant other’s ties/scarves.

And if you live alone? Then you don’t need this guide at all, because all of your gadgets are all plugged in, all the time.
