Foursquare has just updated its popular iOS app to version 6.0, and as a point-oh release, it radically ups the ante when it comes to exploring the cityscape around you and finding you cool stuff in your area.

The biggest change is that Foursquare 6.0 has moved the Explore feature right to the home page, immediately bringing you recommendations on where to go as soon as you open up the app. There’s also a sophisticated recommendations engine that figures out what time of day it is and then uses that data and your familiarity with the local neighborhood to recommend cool, kicking places to check out.

There’s also an increased stress on the importance of search in the app. If you use Foursquare mostly to just check-in to places, Foursquare wants you to start using it for discovery as well, allowing you to quickly find places or venues that are trending in your area.

The new emphasis on exploration and search has also resulted in the check-in button getting shifted to the bottom of the screen. I prefer it there: it’s bigger and easier to hit.

Foursquare 6.0, as always, is free to download on the
iOS App Store.
