Apple has a strict “no porn allowed” policy on the App Store, but what if your softcore porn magazine is also known for its thoughtful writing, its incredible reviews and it’s award-winning journalism?

Simple. You launch your magazine in the App Store without any nudity at all. And that’s just what Playboy is doing.

Called The Good Life, Playboy’s new Newsstand app features exclusive, non-nude content about travel, food, drink, cars, gear, style and entertainment.

There’s also pictorials, but they are of the standard cheesecake variety: no nudity allowed. For example:

And of course, there are the pictorials including Playmate Redux, featuring 2001 Playmate of the Year Brande Roderick; and God Given Gorgeous, in which photographers – in this case Michael Bernard, who has shot many Victoria’s Secret ads — chose models that represent “a new standard of beauty.”

As a guy who actually does read Playboy for the articles, I’m actually glad that the magazine has gone this route. Playboy’s editorial content has always been top-notch, and once you’re past the pubescent stage, a lot of the pictorials actually distract from the real content of the magazine. The new Playboy app gives that content a way to shine.

Playboy for iPhone can be downloaded through iTunes here. The first issue is free; other issues cost $1.99, or $19.99 for a full year.
