There’s a new Android statue on Google’s Mountain View campus today. Made from what appears to be chrome, the little guy is hanging out of Building 45, which is situated opposite the lawn where the other Android statues sit. Its arrival has sparked speculation that Google is ready to release a new version of Android, but according to the company, we’re reading too much into it.
Google has traditionally erected a new Android statue with every major release of the platform. It now has ten altogether, dating right back to Android 1.5 Cupcake.
So it’s understandable that a new addition to its statue family, which was revealed on Google+ by Android Community Manager Paul Wilcox, could suggest a new Android release. Its chrome construction has even led some to speculate that the company is set to fuse its Android and Chrome platforms into one.
It didn’t help that Wilcox’s post began with: “A new version of Android has been released!”
As it turns out, we’re getting all excited over nothing. Wilcox has since dispelled these rumors, insisting that the new statue does not signal a new Android updated.
“To be clear, this post is a little tongue-in-cheek and is not meant to be a sneaky announcement of a new version of Android,” Wilcox added to his original post. “It is, however, an announcement of a new statue.”
Isn’t that a big disappointment?
