Screen protectors are big business, apparently, judging by the number of people I see with the filthy, peeling prophylactics stuck to screens, bubbles pushing through. But they all have one big problem – feel. No matter how fancy they are, those plastic skins will never feel as good as the silky, slippery glass of the naked iPhone screen.

Which is why Seidio will now sell you a tempered glass protector for your iPhone 5.

I have tried glass protectors for the iPad, and found that they’re fantastic, as long as you don’t mind a little extra thickness. And if you don’t care about the back of your device getting scratched up, that extra millimeter can take the place of a whole case.

Anyhow, back to the iPhone. Our own esteemed editor John Brownlee tried one of these glass protectors on his heavy, fat iPhone 4S last year and found it to be excellent, apart from the big chunks of grit and dust he managed to trap under the otherwise bubble-proof cover. You can easily avoid his fate by using the supplied alcohol to swab the screen. John poured his into a shot glass and knocked it back in one, which is probably where his troubles started.

Seidio’s screen also has an oleophobic coating, and tapered edges so it doesn’t feel so chunky in your hand.

Available now, for $40.
