As soon as Facebook acquired Instagram for $1 billion earlier this year, we knew it was only a matter of time before Instagram became more like Facebook. Eventually the two service have to converge in some ways.

Instagram has updated their Privacy Policy and Terms of Service to let users know that starting on January 13th, 2013, all your data is going to be shared with their owner, Facebook. If you don’t want Instagram to share that information with Facebook, well there’s no opt-out so you’re tough out of luck.

Because Facebook owns Instagram a few changes have been made to the privacy policy to inform customers that whatever information they share with Instagram they are also sharing with Facebook.

“Our updated privacy policy helps Instagram function more easily as part of Facebook by being able to share info between the two groups. This means we can do things like fight spam more effectively, detect system and reliability problems more quickly, and build better features for everyone by understanding how Instagram is used.”

Less spam will be pretty nice, but do we really want Facebook to have even more data on us after their disasters with privacy? This was all inevitable anyway so there’s no point in complaining, but we can still dream of what it would have been like if Instagram fell into Twitter’s privacy loving arms instead.
