Microsoft announced today on the official Skype blog that all Messenger users will be using Skype soon to connect with each other via instant message or video call. Microsoft released Skype 6.0 a few weeks ago, which already lets users sign into Skype via their Microsoft account. ONce they do so, their Messenger contacts are there, ready to use.

“Our goal remains to deliver the best communications experience for everyone, everywhere,” said the Redmond, Washington based technology company on their blog today. “… We will retire Messenger in all countries worldwide in the first quarter of 2013 (with the exception of mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available).”

Microsoft is promising broader device support for alternate platforms, like iPad and Android tablets, video calling with Facebook friends and, a feature already available in Skype, group video calling. The company also plans to help users transition and continue to offer information on how to switch to the new system, and will be sending along “some special offers later this year.”

The blog post has some step-by-step screens of how things will look to a new Skype user signing in to use their Messenger account, so be sure to head over and check it out.

It’s great that Microsoft has finally brought some parity to the Mac version of Skype, as well. Hopefully, with the addition of all the Messenger users, Skype will continue to get better and better across all platforms, including the iPad.
