I think there is obviously a strong similarity in the ads, but the graffiti styling and execution is quite different. What the iPod and Lugs ad have mostly in common is a colour palette, which is a common one anyway.

There are a lot of motion graphics in this style, and I imagine quite a lot of ads from round the world too. (Look at projects for Adidas, Nike, MTV etc. over the last 3 years). At best I think you could say a shared inspiration, but not a rip off…

I think the new ad sucks. The motion graphics are so trendwhorish. Drips? You’ve got to be kidding. Not only was this a fad, its an old fad now.

I expected more from Apple and TBWA.

I slightly agree with Disappointed, but not totally. The new ad fit the music genre that it was based upon. The previous iPod commericals were mostly based off Pop/electronic or Rock songs, styles that delegate more movement. Rap/Hip-hop generally uses more of the movements seen in the newest ad. Another thing that is overlooked often with the new ad is the fact that it is not just any new style. This is a specific celebrity ad — remember Vertigo? The style of the ad changes a lot when a specific celebrity ad, with such things as larger facial highlights. Because of the rap and “street” setting, the highlights were made dirtier, unlike the U2 highlights, which were much smoother.

The ad isn’t the best final that Apple has put out, but give the style some developing time and also try to consider how hard it would be to actually make it.

i agree completely with vinitlee, music genre/celeb delegates the style/look. the eminem ipod spot is rap/hiphop perfectly summed up.

Anyone also notice (maybe not US viewers) but the Barclays bank add starting Samuel L Jackson was ripped by Injury Lawyers 4 You?

  8. kev shady says:

Eminem is retired. Why the hell has he disapointed fans, then made this ad just to piss us off?

the advertising world is full of shit, here’s an example of rip off artists being hypocritial twats. from the makers of the lugz ad, another RIP OFF. but i guess its okay to rip off a music video, only 3 months after it airs and causes a huge buzz.

Justin Booth-Clibborn, executive producer for Psyop, said his firm has endured its share of copycats and there are no plans to “make waves.” Still, he admits that even he was struck by the similarities.

“Of all the times that things look like our work, it is the most strikingly similar,” he said.

Although it only has low internal memory, it comes supplied with a 512mb memory card – and it seems that having smaller on-board memory but making up with it with inclusive cards is an effective way of keeping the nice small dimensions but still leaving the user with plenty of memory. Lets face it, it’s not a major prob having a memory card rather than internal mem is it?

The battery life is lower due to the inclusion of EDGE. If you switch the EDGE off, you should see an increase in battery life.

Camera cover I guess was seen as a non-essential as the shape of the camera surround will eliminate lens damage. I’m sure cost and weight were considered also when SE decided to omit the lens cover.
