I’ll never understand why the iPad doesn’t ship with the default iOS weather app, and that goes double for the iPad mini, which is even more portable than it’s bigger sibling. Consequently, I’m always on the look-out for good iPad-centric weather apps.

I’m delighted to see, then, that my favorite iPhone Weather app, Check The Weather, has now been updated to a universal version, keeping all of the swipe-friendly charm and navigation chops of the iPhone version, but elegantly blowing it up to the larger display.

In the app release notes, developer David Smith says that he’s “taken the core benefits of the iPhone version of Check The Weather and applied them to the bigger iPad screen.”

“It would be easy to start cramming in extra details and overwhelm the display,” he writes. “Instead I focused on keeping the core strength of the streamlined interface to the iPad. Slide your finger along the temperature chart to uncover detailed forecast details, no more need to swipe left and right.”

I love Check The Weather, and I’m delighted to have it on the iPad properly now. If you haven’t already picked it up, Check The Weather can be purchased from the App Store for just $1.99. It’s worth every penny.
