FreedomPop Unveils $99 iPod Touch Case With Built-In WiMAX

While the iPod touch is a terrific little device, it would be so much better if Apple gave it a data connection. It’s so frustrating when you quickly want to check on a sports score or load up a map and you’re in an area where there’s no Wi-Fi connection. Thanks to FreedomPop, however, you can now pick up a new case for $99 that comes with built-in WiMAX.

Simply slap the case onto the back of your device and connect your iPod touch to it like it’s a Wi-Fi hotspot. You then have a data connection on your device whenever and wherever you go (provided you can get signal, of course), with 500MB free every month. If you need more data or you want better data speeds, you can sign up to one of FreedomPop’s monthly plans.

There are some caveats, however. First, the case is only compatible with third- and fourth-generation iPod touches — not the latest model — and because it uses Clearwire’s WiMAX network, coverage isn’t the best in the world.

In addition to this, the case is big — it’ll turn your sleek and sexy iPod touch into something the size of an iPhone 3GS, according to TechCrunch — and it’s ugly. In fact, I think I’d prefer to pick up a little Mi-Fi device and carry it around in my pocket.
