With the iPhone 5 right around the corner, you’re probably thinking about selling your iPhone 4S to raise some cash for your new purchase. One of the best ways to do that might be to sell it back to Apple. The Cupertino company is currently offering up to $345 for the iPhone 4S, depending on its condition and specifications, as part of its Reuse and Recycle Program.

You can get a quote for your handset by filling out a simple form on Apple’s website, which will give you an idea how much it’s willing to pay for your handset. If you’ve got a 64GB device in pristine condition — with no scratches or cracks and no water damage — you can expect to receive up to $345. In comparison, Gazelle is currently offering $314 for the same handset.

Of course, if you have less storage and your handset isn’t in great shape, you’ll be quoted less than that.

But if you’re happy with the price Apple gives you, the company will send you a bag that you can pop your iPhone into to send back to Apple’s partner, PowerON. Once inspected to ensure your description of its specifics and condition was accurate, you’ll then receive an Apple gift card redeemable online and in Apple’s retail stores.

This could mean that you won’t need to find any more money to pick up the iPhone 5 on contract, or that you’ll only have to find half of the money to buy it unlocked.

Apple’s service doesn’t offer a price-lock guarantee like Gazelle’s, unfortunately, so the price you’re quoted today could be different the day the iPhone 5 is announced. With that said, it may be worth selling it early if you have a spare handset, just so that you don’t lose out for the sake of a couple weeks.

The iPhone 5 is expected to get its unveiling on September 12, and could be available to purchase around a week later.
