During its quarterly earnings call today, Verizon CFO Andrew Davies revealed to investors that the carrier will be introducing data sharing plans this summer, allowing your whole family to share one data plan for all of the devices in your home.
Details on the plan are very slim at the moment; all we know is that it’s set to launch this summer, according to Davies. However, it has been rumored to be on its way for some time. Back in March, a screenshot that showed Verizon’s “Family Data Usage Calculator” was leaked online.
During today’s call, Verizon also announced it activated 3.2 million iPhones during the quarter, down 1.1 million units (24%) from the last quarter, which featured the busy holiday season. But it still means that more than half of the company’s 6.3 million in total smartphone sales was thanks to the iPhone.
9.1% of all smartphones sold were on Verizon’s LTE network, and data revenues were up $1.1 billion to $6.6 billion year-over-year. Mobile service revenue was also up 7.7% to $15.4 billion. Verizon’s total revenues were $18.3 billion, up 8.2% year-over-year, and 47% of the devices it sold were smartphones. That suggests that devices like the iPhone and Android-powered handsets will soon become more popular than feature phones. It’s about time!
