This iPhone App Will Turn Your Vain Self Portraits Into Ugly Ceramic Vases [CES 2012]

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – You’ve probably never looked at a nice ceramic vase and thought, “Geez, I would love to have one of those made based on my self portrait!” but the guys at Sculpteo are here to help you out just in case. Sculpteo is a free app that allows users to instantly covert a 2D image into a 3D image in the shape of an object such as a vase. So if you’re one of those types that is jealous of everyone who gets to look at your beautiful outline all day, you’re now in luck.

We’re not sure why Sculpteo is pushing facially-based ceramic vases rather than the cooler stuff their app can create – such as custom iPhone cases, or little miniature men who look just like you – but their 3D printing service could be promising if it advances to newer materials and better creation tools. Powering the app and printing process is Sculpteo’s Cloud Engine that makes creating and ordering custom objects based on “human data as input” a breeze.

Sculpteo manages all the manufacturing and delivery of the object once a user has uploaded their order to the cloud. By localizing production to third party facilities customers will get their objects faster than most custom creation services that have centralized creation facilities. Retailers can even jump in on the action by integrating the Sculpteo service on their website. The free app is available now for the iPad and iPhone. If you create a Steve Jobs or Apple logo vase, shoot us a line and let us know what you think.
