Apple Releases 4.4.1 Update for Apple TV, But You Don’t Want to Install It

Apple pushed out another update to its Apple TV yesterday which was set to fix a number of bugs in the 4.4 firmware, however, version 4.4.1 comes with a major issue of its own, so we’re suggesting you ignore this update for the time being.

When 9to5Mac reported the update yesterday, its story was followed by a stack of comments from disgruntled users whose Apple TVs were bricked after installing the latest firmware. One reader warns others about not updating:

Careful, it just bricked my apple TV….gave me the iTunes logo and a mini usb sign….plugging into my mac now…wish me luck….

Many say that they can bring their devices back to life by plugging them into their computers and restoring via iTunes, however, it seems the best option right now is to just steer clear of the 4.4.1 update altogether.

We’ve reached out to Apple for a comment on this, but we’d expect to see another Apple TV update to rectify the issue in the coming days.

Have you had problems updating your Apple TV?

4.4 did the same to my 2 AppleTVs… Both now show the iTunes screen. And of course I don’t have a micro USB cable, a mini USB doesn’t help anything :(

  • Azboy222

I did the update last night and so far so good. I just hope it stays that way. The issue I have is with mirroring and playing games. It will go along fine and then just get choppy and slow. Kind of a bum deal but I am sure apple will fix all the issues we are having.

  • Krabboy22

The USB mini does work if you have problems with iTunes clse iTunes down & restart it & it will work I had to do this a couple of times but it does work and the updated is worth it.

  • Rod

Appears to have killed the Ethernet on my  AppleTV. WiFi is fine…

  • FriarNurgle

    Good to know. Thanks.

  • TLoke2112

Thanks for the warning. I am falling more in love with that little brick every time I use it. Now that I can control it with my Touch it’s that much better. The Netflix interface is by far the best I’ve used.

  • Tim

Updated both of my Apple TV’s…no problems here.

  • CollegiateLad

Updated mine – with zero problems!

  • Phil

You guys had me worried, I left it last night to update on it’s own, checked it this morning and It’s good as new. No problems here! Good luck everyone else!

  • Rjp9200

I commented on the original last night that I was not having any problems with any of the Apple TVs in my house post update. Still no problems with the build on my end.

  • russhughes

It’s probably the Apple porn blocker, stop the hysteria!

  • Aj Tk427

Haven’t updated and won’t until they have a working untethered jailbreak, right now I’m loving my ATV2 as xbmc device

  • Markus Iturriaga

I’ve updated one of my ATVs but not the second one yet. The first went off without a hitch.

  • prof_peabody

Most of the commentaries here seem to be mixing up the two recent updates.

The latest one according to Apple: “… solves a problem which forced some Apple TVs to be connected to iTunes in order to download v4.4”

The (single?) person described in the article that had a problem had the exact problem that the update was trying to fix.  I would bet there is nothing wrong with this update at all.

my classmate’s mother makes $70 every hour on the computer. She has been laid off for 6 months but last month her income was $9025 just working on the computer for a few hours. Read about it on this web site and get started,

  • Tom Hayllar

I updated last night only to get the connect to itunes prompt and a rapidly flashing white led. I will try to connect to itunes later tonight when I’m home from work. Wish me luck.

  • Brittp2

Updated mine to 4.4 and it started to go to screensaver after 2 minutes repeatedly. just switched to “never” on screensaver to workaround. Any help out there or any others having this issue?

  • Desoulbel

I updated about 1:00am this morning to watch some Netflix while I goto sleep and it worked fine and let me do what I needed afterwards.

Bricked my apple TV. Now I have to go buy a cable. Getting tired of Apple. Too many mistakes too often on too many products.

  • Sbarlow

I updated to 4.4.1 and all went fine for me
    Happy camper here

  • Ivancano

Yes  i had same problem  but fixed by  restoring via iTunes,

  • Jwgibbs44

    i had no problem

  • AdamWalter

I just checked for an update (running 4.4) and it says I’m up to date. Looks like Apple pulled it?

  • chapps

Yeah, the screen went black at the end of the update – frozen. I prayed it wasn’t bricked … Lucked out after doing a hard reboot. There have been a couple of fleeting issues, but so far it’s fine. I love AirPlay.

  • Kewldudeorl

Take it to the genius bar . My apple tv bricked and they fixed it , I was not going to buy a cable!

  • Isaiah Pavia-Cruz

I’m on 4.3 and it won’t even update.  The settings say that my Apple TV is up to date.

  • Peter Utzon

Same as Isaiah, 4.3 and ajour. Annoying! Anybody out there who knows what to do…wait?

  • Scott Kapich

Mine was fixed by changing the security on my router from WEP to WPA2 personal. I run an iMac on Lion and Apple said that Lion does not like WEP security and will keep dropping wifi until it will not try anymore to connect. I changed to WPA2 personal and the update took and all is good. Hope this helps anyone.

  • Jakefor3

    Same here.

  • Rex Perry

Just bricked my little box.  This is the last straw,  Apple TV was never worth the $99 anyway.
