Mac sales are showing continued growth in the most recent business quarter of 2011, according to a new report from esteemed analyst Gene Munster.

As noted by market research firm NPD, Apple’s Mac sales are up 22% year-over-year in the third quarter of 2011. Strong sales are mainly attributed to the introduction of the new MacBook Air and Mac Mini models released in July.

“According to the latest data from NPD, Apple’s Mac sales are up 22% for the first two months of the September quarter. The street is expecting a 16% growth rate for the entire September quarter.

Munster attributes the strong sales to OSX Lion and refreshed MacBook Airs and Mac Minis.

NPD also says iPod sales are down 16% for the first two months of the quarter, which is not as bad as a the street expected.”

Apple is predicted to sell around 4.5 million Macs by this quarter’s end. The MacBook Air is expected to account for 10-20% of the total sales.

With Back to School promotions ending, Mac sales should see a slight downturn in the next couple of months. But the holiday season is expected to show a good return on Mac sales for Apple, perhaps breaking the company’s record last year of 4.13 million Macs sold.
