Despite its upcoming ‘spaceship campus‘ in Cupertino, Apple will need a third campus by 2015 because of the rate at which the company continues to expand. The inaugural hearing to discuss the second site are set to take place tonight in San Francisco, but Apple may already be thinking about a third base.

Cupertino’s mayor, Gilbert Wong, was quizzed by Mercury News on the Apple’s plans for future development, and revealed that as soon as the second campus is finished in 2015, the company may need a third one:

Wong said Apple executives have told him the company is expanding so fast that it expects to start working on Apple Campus 3 at an unknown location after they finish the second headquarters in 2015.

Wong also revealed that he refers to Apple’s spaceship campus as ‘Apple 2’, because “it makes sense”:

“… it makes sense to call it Apple 2. They have iPad 1 and iPad 2; iPhone 1 and iPhone 2. This building is probably going to have much more innovative technologies and products than what they have at their first campus.”

To give you an idea of Apple’s rapid expansion, its new campus will accommodate an additional 13,000 employees over 176 acres, a 25,000 square-foot fitness center, a 1,000-seat auditorium, and nearly 11,000 parking spaces.
