How To Jailbreak iOS 5 Beta Using Redsn0w [Jailbreak Superguide]

The Redsn0w software by DevTeam has always allowed you to jailbreak your iOS device, giving you complete control over your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch (see why you should jailbreak here). This morning, though, redsn0w version 0.9.8b1 was released with iOS 5 Beta 1 support, meaning you can now jailbreak devices and run Cydia apps on devices with iOS 5 installed. Here’s how to jailbreak iOS 5!

Warning: This is a tethered jailbreak, meaning that every time you reboot the device, you’ll need to use redsn0w again or else lose all your jailbreak data. Also, redsn0w will not carrier unlock your device, and if your device isn’t registered to run iOS 5, this guide won’t work for you. This should work on any device capable of running iOS 5 Beta 1 short of the iPad 2, which still hasn’t been jailbroken, but we’ve only tested it on the iPhone 4. Be careful!

  • A compatible iOS device with its UDID registered with Apple’s iOS Developer Program
  • That same device updated to firmware iOS 5 beta 1
  • A copy of the .ipsw file of the iOS 5 Beta 1 Firmware for your Device (can be downloaded from Apple’s Developer Site)
  • iTunes 10.5 Beta
  • redsn0w 0.9.8b1 for Mac.

Please backup all your information using iTunes before following this tutorial.

1. Download redsn0w and extract the ZIP. Double-click to open redsn0w application.

2. Click the ‘Browse’ button below the text, it will ask you to locate a firmware file. Choose the iOS 5 Beta Firmware (downloaded from Apple’s developer site for your device and click ‘Open’.

3. It will then process the firmware file. After it says ‘IPSW successfully identified’, click the ‘Next’ button located near the bottom-right and it will download some jailbreak data from the server.

4. Then choose if you want to install Cydia and click the ‘Next’ button again.

5. Now it will ask you to connect the device to your Mac/PC and then turn it off, do so and click ‘Next’. Now follow the on-screen instructions to proceed.

6. The device will reboot showing ‘Downloading Jailbreak Data’ logo and then some code on the device’s screen, while redsn0w sends modified files to the device. When redsn0w is done, click the ‘Finish’ button and let the rest of process continue on the device, please be patient.

7. After it reboots, your device should now be jailbroken with Cydia on the homescreen.

All credit for the great tool goes to the DevTeam.

There is really no point in doing it. Loads of the Cydia apps don’t work, its only useful for Cydia devs to test their apps and get them working.

  • John S. Wilson

Does this work on a pc? At the beginning he says you need Redsnow for Mac.

  • John Ramirez

    nope, not yet.

  • sayam_aggarwal

    it’s mac only for now

  • Csense

I agree…Who needs to jailbreak anymore? I didn’t see the point in it when iOS 4.3  came out and after WWDC all the features that have been posted on other sites of the features that are in iOS 5, WHY jailbreak!!???

  • John S. Wilson

    OK thanks.

  • Gheedsgreed

iOS5 addresses many issues, but not all of them. I personally still need SBSettings, Browserchanger, My3G, FolderEnhancer, Winterboard, etc.

  • Csense

I took the time and looked up all the apps you named.. and I have one word… REALLY!???. These are nothing more that cosmetic (winterboard) and as for  Browserchanger..if you have more than just safari on your iPhone or iPad you do get a choice of which one you want to open it.. so what if I cant make it my default. Im sure there are great apps that we would wish apple had and so you jailbreak, but the point i was making is that I would rather wait for apple or a “legit” app come out through the App store to get it than hack my phone or ipad.

  • Gheedsgreed

Actually Winterboard is the ONLY cosmetic app I mentioned. Changing default browser makes a big difference because most of the time you are opening the browser from another app like Mail or something, so everything is automatic and “magical” like the iPhone should be. SBSetting is built into jailbreaks by default because it is one of the biggest reason people jb; it no longer takes several presses to change brightness or turn on airplane mode. FolderEnhancer dramatically overhauls the folder system, which by default is very simplistic. It also increases the speed at which folders open. My3G I actually don’t use much because I have capped data, but for people on unlimited plans is very useful.
You asked why people jailbreak, and this is why. There are a lot of features still unavailable, and people want them now rather than wait months or years. If you have noticed, apps like these that improve the iOS’s core functions are only accessible through jailbreaking because Apple wants to preserve a level of stability in their products. Some people want to jailbreak to improve their devices do so knowing they minimal risks they take.

I heard that you can down grade as long as you have your shsh saved. i
made sure mine was saved before putting iOS 5 on my iphone 4 incase it
was way to buggy, so far runs fine to me. I will not be jail breaking it
    though until the official release.

  • Llcooljay66

well after u jailbreak you have access to the file system so if u want to activate iOS 5 with out a udid using iTunes and have your cell service work grab iPhone explorer and go to system version plist and del from beta down cept last line and reboot plug into iTunes and it will activate like normal with no udid

  • jasonfweb

I have the same problem, jailbroken and white cydia icon that doesn’t launch! Can you explain me how to solve this?

  • Star_Orbiter

That’s a tethered jailbreak. Each and every time you power off the device, you will need to run redsn0w again using “just boot tethered right now.”

  • FriarNurgle

    Perfect walk through. Thanks.
