By

yahoonews

Yahoo! has been undertaking something of an iOS App Store renaissance lately. First, they made their Flickr app into a bonafide Instragam challenger; then their new Yahoo! Weather app effortlessly fused beautifully wrought weather information with the best photographs on Flickr; and now Yahoo! has updated its iOS app with natural language summaries of all the news likely to be of interest to you.

Yahoo’s New Weather App For iPhone Is Here, And It’s Absolutely Gorgeous

By

yahooweather2

Yahoo! has just released a stunningly beautiful Weather app for the iPhone. It’s a beautiful piece of digital art, fusing two of Yahoo’s best remaining properties — their weather service, and the photo-sharing group Flickr — into something lovely that manages to not just give you a forecast of the weather of the city you’re in: it also captures some of that city’s soul.

Yahoo Talking To Apple About More Integration In iOS [Report]

By

yahoo-logo

Yahoo is talking to Apple about how it can integrate more of its services in iOS, according to a new report from The Wall Street Journal. Apple currently uses Yahoo to provide weather, stocks, and sports information. But Yahoo reportedly wants to play a more “prominent role on Apple’s iPhone and iPad devices.”

An obvious change would be making Yahoo the default search engine in Safari, but that won’t be happening anytime soon. Microsoft’s Bing engine currently provides results for Yahoo search, which complexes things. Google also has a deal in place with Apple that gives it the default search position in Safari. Apple would obviously want to cut Google out if possible. Siri already avoids using Google search for a lot of queries.

Oh Look, Jony Ive Ate Pizza With Silicon Valley’s Most Powerful People Last Night [Image]

By

jonyiveeatindinner

Everybody wants to be Jony Ive’s friend, so he probably gets invited to a lot of the dinners where Silicon Valley’s elite just hangout, scarf down pizza, and get blitzed on wine. We rarely see pictures of such events, but last night a picture was posted of Sir Jony himself hanging out with 11 of the most powerful people in Silicon Valley.

The dinner was hosted by Nirav Tolia – a longtime Silicon Valley entrepreneur – and featured the CEOs of Twitter, Yelp, Path, Dropbox, Yahoo, and other companies. What’d they do besides eat pizza? Did a wild night of karaoke follow over at Marrisa Mayer’s manor? Who knows? Who cares? But we’re glad Jony gets to hangout with people outside the mothership from time to time.

Here’s a list of everyone that was present at the dinner:

iPhone 5 Beats Kim Kardashian To Become Second Most Searched Term Of 2012

By

kimmykandheriphoneforealz

Say what you will about Apple losing marketshare to Android and Samsung. The iPhone 5 is still the most lusted-after gadget of 2012 if search queries are any indication of where the public’s heart lies. People want the iPhone 5 more than they want to see pics of Kim Kardashian.

Yahoo released their year in review report on the most searched terms of 2012 and the iPhone 5 came in second place, beating out Kim Kardashian, Lindsay Lohan, Kate Upton, Kate Middleton, and Whitney Houston, while “elections” was the most searched term overall.

Here’s How Insane Apple’s Profits Have Been In 2012 Next To Their Competition [Graph]

By

applesprofitiscrazy

When you just look at the money Apple made in 2012 it’s pretty incredible. But when you provide some context to those earnings and put Apple’s profits next to the competition’s profits, Apple’s performance is absolutely mindboggling.

From October 2011 to September 2012 Apple made more money than Microsoft, Ebay, Google, Yahoo! Facebook and Amazon combined. In that same period, Dell, Asus, Intel, Acer, IBM, Lenovo, and HP (basically the entire PC industry) only made $19.3 billion in profit, which is less than half of Apple’s profit.

Use Messages To Chat On All Your Favorite IM Services [OS X Tips]

By

Messages New IM Account

With Mountain Lion came Messages, Apple’s new version of iChat. The killer feature, of course, is that you can talk to folks on iOS or OS X right from your Mac, over the internet, without incurring SMS fees for those using an iOS device. I like it because I can chat with friends who are “texting” me during the day, but I don’t have to type on the smaller iPhone keyboard to do so.

But what about all those other IM services out there? Well, Messages supports AIM, Jabber, Google Talk, and Yahoo! messaging services, so you can run all your messages through the one app. It’s super easy to do, too.

Does Yahoo Becoming An iPhone-Only Company Even Matter?

By

Does it really matter if Marissa Mayer wants everyone at Yahoo to use an iPhone?
Does it really matter if Marissa Mayer wants everyone at Yahoo to use an iPhone?

Apparently Marissa Mayer wants everyone at Yahoo to use an iPhone and she may be willing to spend some of Yahoo’s cash to buy everyone in the company an iPhone if that’s what it takes. The move would be unusual on a couple of different fronts and it would buck some of the trends popular in the Internet and technology industries as well as in mainstream business. The biggest question isn’t what this means for Yahoo – it’s  what will consumers and the industry think about her an Yahoo if she does

Yahoo Reaches For Relevancy With New Axis Search Platform, iOS App Included

By

Axis on iPad

Yahoo announced tonight the launch of its new search platform, Axis. The idea here is that users can search the web using their iPad, iPhone or computer and then pick up that search when they move from one device to the next. It’s a cool idea, and one that we hope other search companies pick up soon.

Yahoo is touting Axis as a one-step search solution, allowing users to visually search the web from any other web page without having to leave that page to search. The visual layout on the app looks a lot like the Pulse News app, with previews of web search destination sites listed in swipe-able rows on a black background.

Apple has lost an appeal against a court ruling in Germany to have its iCloud push services restored. The service was disabled back in February after it was ruled that Apple had infringed on patents owned by Motorola Mobility. While iCloud is still available, users now have to open up their Mail app and fetch new email manually, or set their device to fetch email at certain intervals.

Yahoo has decided to do some pre-Spring cleaning and has announced they will no longer be supporting their lesser used apps. This may make some of you Yahoo app addicts sad, but for the rest of us, I’m sure we won’t mind. Yahoo has stated that as the mobile space moves at an insane rate, they too must keep up with what users want and are looking for in today’s market. That’s why they have decided to cease support of the following apps in order to make room for the future:

Is Apple Set to Purchase Video Streaming Service Hulu?

By

Apple’s abundance of available cash is certainly no secret. With $76.2 billion in the bank at the end of the June quarter, the company has more money then the gross domestic product of almost two-thirds of the world’s countries. But what will it do with all that cash? Just sit on it in case of an (incredibly) rainy day?

Of course not. To begin with, it may just be about to buy Hulu.
