Bizarre game trailer will give you a serious case of the thirsties

Soda Drinker Pro
Prepare for some existential thirst-quenching. Screencap: Evan Killham/Cult of Mac

Soda Drinker Pro lauds itself as “the original FPS (first-person soda) simulator,” and that’s probably true because that description is mad specific.

The weirdo game, which looks straight out of Cartoon Network’s stoner-centric programming block Adult Swim, just landed a spot on digital-distribution platform Steam after a successful Greenlight campaign. Greenlight lets the Steam community vote on which indie games earn a place in the store, and developer Snowrunner Productions celebrated by releasing a brand-new trailer (below) that looks like the kind of soda commercial that surrealist filmmaker David Lynch would make.

Sentient-toast simulator I Am Bread kneads its way on to iOS

Yeah, you read that right – this is a video game where you play as a piece of bread on an epic journey to become an actual piece of toast.

I Am Bread has been out on Steam Early Access since December of last year, and now the developers at Bossa Studios have let it slip that the game will indeed come out on iOS, as soon as they finish up the PC/Mac version.

If you’ve seen the massively viral hit game Goat Simulator, you’ll immediately have a sense of how this one plays out. You’ll hit various keys on your keyboard or buttons on your controller, and move a slice of oddly movable bread around, trying to find some way to toast yourself. Here’s a quick video to visualize it.

Goat Simulator gets even weirder with MMO herd mode

What’s better than goats? Goats you can control in a weird physics-simulator, of course.

What’s better than that? A full-on massively multiplayer online version of the goat sim. Duh.

The hilarious developers at Coffee Stain Studios (Sanctum, Sanctum 2) just offered up a free patch to all current owners (via Steam, not iOS) of the game, turning a wacky game jam cult hit into an MMO with various classes, like the Tank, or Magician.

Shit just goat serious, guys. Check out the sweet trailer below.

Stay one move ahead with this free-to-play digital board game

By

Aerena screen (13)

Imagine a game that mashes up the best of a classic strategy game like speed chess and a modern hit like League of Legends. If you do, you’ll probably come up with something like Aerena: Clash of Champions, a steampunk-themed turn-based strategy game that uses the hero mechanics of other massively online battle arena games like Dota 2 in a painstakingly created digital board game arena.

The game will go free-to-play this Wednesday on Steam (it’s already out for Android tablets — iOS versions to come soon), and is a great new gaming experience — we’ve been playing it all morning. It takes only a short while for the casual gamer to learn how to play, but there is enough strategy and balanced mechanics to give core players a ton of depth.

If you’re super savvy, though, you’ll grab the early access copy today for $10, which nets you a full $30 worth of downloadable content, extra heroes and more. Either way, Aerena is a brilliant game and deserves your attention.

Fun Space Sim FTL Warps To The iPad April 3 With Advanced Content

By

So. Good.
So. Good.

FTL: Faster Than Light came out in September of 2012, and we’ve done nothing but rave about it since then.

The only thing missing from the FTL experience, though, was the ability to play the dang thing on an iPad. “How sweet would that be?” we thought.

Today’s our lucky day, then, as the developers behind the hot space-sim rogue-like have righted the wrongs in their universe by letting us all know that FTL would be available for the iPad (along with an Advanced Edition for the Mac and PC) this coming April 3.

Open Sandbox Space Sim Drifter Makes The Jump To Mac On Steam

By

You call this a beta? Wow, gorgeous.
You call this a beta? Wow, gorgeous.

I’ve had my eye on Celsius Game Studios since I first heard about their in-development space simulator game, Drifter, back in 2012. Since then, developer Colin Walsh has continued to pour on the awesomesauce to create a game that–while still in active beta–impresses on every level.

Drifter takes place in a procedurally-generated galaxy that contains 100,000 light years worth of star systems to explore (that’s a lot of star systems–tens of thousands). The soundtrack is by indie-darling composer Danny Baranowsky (Super Meat Boy, The Blinding of Isaac) and it will thrill you in all the right places. Take a look at the trailer below to get a sense of how it looks and sounds.

Upcoming Retro Action Platforming RPG Game Looks For Greenlight

By

crystal catacombs

See that? That’s the excellent looking retro action platform from Levels or Lives, Super Fun Games, and Crescent Moon Games. It’s called Crystal Catacombs, and was successfully funded on Kickstarter in July of 2012.

To continue the process, the developers want to get Crystal Catacombs on Steam, which is perhaps the most well-known gaming distribution platform for Mac, Windows, and Linux games. The process there is known as Project Greenlight, and Steam members all vote on the games they’d like to see on Steam.

Year In Review: The Best Freakin’ Mac Games Of 2013

By

Take out those aliens, Commander.
Take out those aliens, Commander.

There are still a ton of us who game on our Macs. If you’re one of those folks, you’ll know how great a platform the Mac can be. While there may not be as overwhelming an amount of games on Apple’s fantastic computer platform, the ones that are there are of high quality.

And? There are a ton more these days than ever before. 2013 was a great year to be a Mac gamer, with ports of a ton of the big titles of the year, including games like XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Sim City, and Bioshock Infinite.

A bunch of iOS games came to the bigger screens of the Mac, too, with fantastic, hit titles like tower offense, Anomaly 2 and Solstice Arena, a speed massively online battle arena (MOBA) game from Zynga that has some legs, and some smaller indie gems like Gentlemen! from Lucky Frame.

Whether you like the big blockbuster games or the more cerebral indie ones, the Mac platform has a plethora of gaming experiences to choose from. Here are the best ones we’ve seen.

Bad Hotel Mac

In case you’re not from around here, you should know that I’m a huge fan of Scottish game developer Lucky Frame, what with their weird, wonderful visual and musical sensibilities that result in games like Pugs Luv Beats and Gentlemen!, a Victorian-themed Joust-like game.

They’ve just announced that one of their most award-winning games, Bad Hotel, is coming to the Mac and I, for one, couldn’t be more excited.

Watch The Steam Controller Get Demoed With Some Of The Mac’s Most Popular Games

By

Screen Shot 2013-10-15 at 8.19.04 AM

You may have heard of Valve’s new Steam Controller, an integral part of their living room push that makes PC games past, present and future playable on the big screen. The Steam Controller looks pretty crazy, with two trackpad-like controls instead of thumbsticks, and a touchscreen instead of face buttons, but how will it play? Pretty well, from the looks of things.

Telltale Says The Wolf Among Us Delayed For Mac On Steam

By

Mac version available soon

Oh, woe are we!

Telltale’s follow up to hit adventure game The Walking Dead has been delayed for Mac, due to “an unforeseen issue with the Mac version of Episode 1,” whatever that means. The Wolf Among Us is an episode-based adaptation of Vetigo’s Fable, a graphic novel set in the real world with mythical fairy tale creatures like Snow White, Jack Frost, Pinocchio, and–of course–the Big Bad Wolf.

The game publisher updated its original blog post announcement of the October 11 release to say that it “is working on an update right now and expect to have the Mac build live on Steam and the Telltale website within the next few days.”

Stack Up On 8 Fun Games For Free With The Freebie Gamer Bundle [Deals]

By

CoM - FreebieGamerBundle

Gaming on the Mac has become increasingly popular, with the advent of services such as Steam (highlighted in a recent Cult of Mac Deals offer for Borderlands 2) and the renaissance of the Mac as a primary household computer. And with games on gaming consoles hovering around the $50 mark, gamers are looking for other opportunities to “get their game on” withoutbreaking the bank in the process. The Mac has become another platform where this exploration can be done – and Cult of Mac Deals has an offer where the impact on your pocketbook will be absolutely zero.

That’s because Cult of Mac Deals has assembled The Freebie Gamer Bundle, which is available for a very limited time.

Recently Greenlit Steam Game Teslagrad Is One Pretty Puzzle Platformer [PAX 2013]

SEATTLE, PAX 2013 – As we walked around the show floor at Penny Arcade this year, our attention was drawn to a beautifully hand-drawn platform game playing on a Wii U in one corner of the more independent gaming section of the expo. Called Teslagrad, this is a 2D puzzle platformer with action elements that uses magnetism and electricity as its main mechanic.

This is the second game from developer Rain AS, itself based in Bergen, Norway, and it’s just gotten picked up for Steam’s Greenlight program, a way for Valve to support independent game developers on its own digital distribution platform.

Husband & Wife Team Ready To Release Legend of Dungeon On Steam In Two Weeks [PAX 2013]

By

Legend of Dungeon

PAX CoM Banner

SEATTLE, PAX 2013 – Robot Loves Kitty is a husband and wife game development team who used to live in a treehouse to save money. They started a Kickstarter hoping to raise just enough money to buy a decent laptop and a copy of Unity to develop the game. They ultimately raised 650 percent of their initial request, making things easier, yet much more complex, than they’d ever planned.

“I can’t believe it’s so popular,” said Alix Stolzer, the wife half of the Robot Loves Kitty development team. She also does some of the artwork, the story, and does PR for the game. The extra funding enabled the team to rent a tiny apartment and pay for internet, but it also requires them to create more features than they initially planned.

SEATTLE, PAX 2013 – Phobic Studios, the developers behind hit iOS game, Dragonvale, showed off their latest creation, Glare, at the Penny Arcade Expo this weekend in Seattle.

The game is made in Unity, which will let the studio release on Mac, PC, and Linux at first, with some vague plans for mobile spin off titles in the future. It’s looking pretty delightful, with gorgeously rendered, faux-2D backgrounds and plenty of lighting and particle effects. That sounds pretty dry on paper, but it produces a lovely effect while playing. Here’s a quick video of the gameplay we saw in the closed-door meeting.

Free-To-Play Smashmuck Champions Is A Quick, Whimsical MOBA For Mac [PAX 2013]

SEATTLE, PAX 2013 – We got to spend some time with Ben, one of the lead designers on the free-to-play multiplayer battle arena (MOBA) game, Smashmuck Champions, currently display here in Seattle at Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) 2013. Ben showed us how quickly a match can start and conclude, a far cry from the more typical 30 minutes to an hour of a MOBA like League of Legends or Defense of the Ancients. The match Ben played in while he talked to us was all of ten minutes or so, full of frenetic battle action with fun characters, called champions, jumping around and duking it out across the battle arena.

Here’s the closed beta announcement trailer, though Ben let us know that there should be early access on Steam next week on September 6th. You can see plenty of gameplay in the video below.

The current digital iteration will feature a single player campaign of 15 missions, each set on the giant derelict spaceship (the “hulk” of the title), “Sin of Damnation.” There will also be multiplayer head-to-head action, oh yes.

‘Dragonvale’ Co-Creators Announce Action Platformer Game, ‘Glare,’ Coming To Steam This Fall

By

Glare

Phobic Studios are best known for the collaborative development with Backflip Studios on runaway hit, Dragonvale, but the Boulder, Colorado-based company has been in the game for quite some time, spawning several entertaining mobile titles in the process. The company has just announced its next game, an action platformer game set in, well, a solar system.

In Glare, you’ll play as The Shiner, a being of light who must travel around a beautifully rendered solar system and save the sun itself from an evil threat. Glare will release in fall of this year on Steam for Mac, Linux, and PC systems.

‘Shadowrun Returns’ Is A Fully Realized Tabletop To Digital RPG Conversion [Review]

By

pikePlace01
Shadowrun Returns by Harebrained Schemes
Category: Mac Games
Works With: OS X
Price: $19.99

I’ve just spent the last several hours knee-deep in the drek of post-magic Seattle, mixing and fighting with dwarves, trolls, mages, and deckers, and I’m here to tell you it’s utterly wiz.

Shadowrun Returns is out now on Steam for Mac and PC and should be headed to iPad and Android soon, as well. In my short time with the game, I’ve got to say that I’m deeply impressed.

Every written line, all the dialogue, the visuals, are pure Shadowrun, down to the totem poles on the corners of downtown Seattle and the angry patois of the citizen characters running in the shadows beneath the megacorps who care only about nuyen, the currency of the age.

The music and the visuals are fantastic, conveying a sense of dread and decay in every environment, but, honestly, Shadowrun Returns shines due to its fictional setting and attention to storytelling.

I’m hooked, and can’t wait to find out what happens next.
