Yes, Microsoft’s Office 2011 Is Compatible With OS X Mountain Lion

If you’re worried about Microsoft’s 2011 Office Suite not working with Apple’s latest jungle cat, don’t sweat it. The guys and gals in Redmond have confirmed that both the 2011 and 2008 versions of Office are indeed fully compatible with the newly-released OS X Mountain Lion.

Microsoft wants its users to make sure Office for Mac’s AutoUpdate is enabled “to make the most of the upgrade to Mountain Lion” with future updates. Mountain Lion’s Gatekeeper security means that you’ll need to use Microsoft’s AutoUpdate tool to keep Office for Mac current.

Microsoft Pulls Issue-prone Office 2011 Update

Microsoft pulls Office for Mac 2011 SP 2 update in response to problems

Late last week, Microsoft pulled the Service Pack 2 update to Office for Mac 2011 from its upgrade servers after users complained that the update created problems with the Outlook email and calendar application. The move also coincided with reports that Office vulnerabilities could lead to additional malware infection risks.

Microsoft had released the update the previous week (April 12). After initial reports that users were getting an error messages related to Office 2011 database, the company posted advice for users to follow before attempting to install the update and a work around for some of the problems that users experienced. A few days lated Microsoft pulled the update completely.

Microsoft Adding Lion Features to Office 2011

With more and more Mac apps gaining compatibility with OS X Lion, Microsoft’s widely popular Office suite for the Mac is the next in line. MacNN is reporting that Microsoft is hard at work implementing Lion features like Auto Save, Versions, and full-screen mode in Office 2011.

Apple’s own iWork productivity suite has already been updated with these Lion-specific features, and Microsoft aims at adding these features to Office in the coming months.

David Pogue Hates Office for Mac 2011

Last week, Microsoft released the anticipated Office 2011 for Mac update, the first OS X version of their popular Office suite for several years. It’s getting good reviews, but you know who hates it? David Pogue, who describes it as utterly broken in a lengthy review.

The whole thing’s worth reading, but here’s the takeaway:

[I]t’s sad to see such unpolished work from Microsoft’s Mac team. Looks like they had their eye on the big-ticket items—and simply left the smaller cookies to crumble.

I have no thoughts to share yet on the matter, except to say that I wanted to dump sewage all over Steve Ballmer’s head when I installed the application suite and it immediately dumped seven or eight hideous icons into my dock without once consulting me.
