This week’s must-have apps roundup kicks off with Mailbox, the best third-party mail client that’s available on iOS. I’ve used iPad notepad app, Penultimate, since I’ve owned an iPad, and I bought an iPad 1 on day, well, one. I love the idea of keeping several Moleskine-type notebooks on my iPad to carry around with me.
That’s when I have my iPad. Sometimes, I don’t. Or I have my iPad mini. Or my iPhone. Or just my Mac (I’m spoiled, I know). That’s when I use Evernote, so I can take notes on any of these devices and have them accessible on any of the others.
When I found out that Penultimate is now both free and syncs with Evernote, I knew I had to share with you how to get it all set up so you could have the joy that is synced Evernote Penultimate notes!
Remember bookmarks? It’s how we used to save sites to go back to later. In theory anyway. Browser bookmark search was pretty terrible, and you had to remember the name of the site to find it again. So we mostly just used Google to search for a site every time we wanted to go there.

Along with Evernote’s big Penultimate announcement yesterday came another big update. Evernote Hello, the person-remembering app, is now at version 2.0. It adds two great features: business-card scanning and a tie-in with social networks.

Penultimate for iPad has today received its first major update since it was acquired by Evernote back in May 2012. In addition to Evernote syncing, the app offers a number of nifty new features, the most impressive of which is handwriting search — which uses handwriting recognition technology to allow you to find notes you’ve written by hand. And if that wasn’t enough, the app is now completely free.
I thought I had the whole “paperless” thing under control until Doxie sent over the new, budget-priced Doxie One for me to review. Trust me: If you snap photos of your receipts with your iPhone in an attempt to banish dead trees from your life, you should probably switch to a portable scanner.
It really is that much better.
Evernote has updated its Android and iOS apps today — just under a month after introducing a brand new redesign — to add support for Evernote Business, meaning those who subscribe to the service can now access it on their smartphones and tablets. The update also brings a new Business Notebook design and other improvements.
Believe it or not, Black Friday has already come and gone. Pretty soon the Christmas season will begin, and we’ll mark this midwinter festival by getting together with friends and family and continuing to drink and eat far too much.

We’ve been talking about it for several weeks, and today, Evernote 5 makes its public debut on the Mac — exactly a week after touching down on iOS. This mammoth update brings over 100 new features, in addition to a swanky new user interface. The whole thing has been “re-imagined” to make it more accessible and more useful than ever before.

It’s November, and you all know what that means: No, not the growing of wispy, creepy mustaches. November is National Novel-Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo for (almost) short.
NaNoWriMo is the annual attempt by many tens of thousands of people to finally get that novel out of their head and into the cloud storage option of their choice. The goal is to write a 50,000-word novel by midnight on the 30th November, and you can get there by fair means or foul. The rules? It has to be a novel, it has to be 50,000 words (or more) long, and it has to be written in November.

Calling the new Livescribe Sky a pen is like calling your iPhone 5 a phone. Technically the Sky is a writing instrument, but it has about as much in common with a pen as your iPhone has with an old rotary dial telephone.
