iPhone 6 production lines almost ready to roll

A new report coming of China suggests that the eagerly-anticipated iPhone 6 is currently in the PVT (Product Validation Test) stage of production. During this stage, the assembly line runs at full speed to produce a small number of finished units for quality assurance purposes. If any issues are highlighted at this stage, the production line can be adjusted to ensure that all faults are ironed out by the time mass production begins.

If there are no faults highlighted, Foxconn can begin work producing the “unprecedented” numbers of iPhone 6 units for Apple, ready for its expected September 9 unveiling.

The report cites Foxconn sources, and comes from Xiang Ligang, a former professor at the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, and current CEO of Chinese publication CCTimes, which is a respected source of news on China’s ICT industry.

While all reports of production problems on the iPhone 6 are rumors, it is worth noting that Foxconn recently announced July as being responsible for its lowest monthly earnings since March 2013. Although the company didn’t say what the holdup has been, it did observe that it was the result of challenges in the production process, related to the assembly complexity of new products which were making large-scale volume production difficult.

Apple’s most ambitious smartphone wasn’t singled out, but as the company’s most ambitious smartphone refresh in years, it is entirely believable that Foxconn has had a few challenges on its hands living up to Cupertino’s exacting standards.
