With AT&T in the process of gobbling up T-Mobile, and with rumors consistently suggesting that Apple will bring the iPhone 5 to T-Mobile, it’s hard not to think of this as significant: T-Mobile is now giving out iPhone 4 compatible Micro SIMs to their customers.

Coming just a month after T-Mobile claimed to have a million unlocked iPhones running on their network, and a similar amount of time after Apple started selling unlocked iPhoe 4s directly on their site, T-Mobile’s micro SIm description reads:

“Already have a GSM phone or iPhone that you need to activate—or have anunlocked GSM phone you want to use on the T-Mobile network? Just get a Micro SIM card and choose a plan. Slip the ready-to-use Micro SIM Card into your phone and you’re ready to go.”

It’s a curious move that seems to herald an official T-Mobile launch of the iPhone 5 later in the year. It can’t just be about unlocked iPhone 4s, because those phones won’t work on T-Mobile’s 3G network, and will fall back on EDGE. They must be expecting something official.
