20100319-ipwned.jpg

Tech site H-Online has an interesting story today, quoting security expert Charlie Miller about his forthcoming talk at the CanSecWest conference next week.
He says OS X is full of security holes. There are lots more than in Windows, he claims.
And yet: OS X is a safer system to use. Why? Because, in the words [...]

Apple Devotes Entire Home Page To Jerome York Obituary

20100318-york.jpg

If ever you needed a sign that Apple was a different kind of technology company, this is it.
What other computer manufacturer would remove its top-selling, hype-inducing, industry-altering new product from the prime spot on its website home page, and replace it with an obituary to an investor?
This is one of those “Here’s to the [...]

Second University Requires Students to Buy iPod Touch

Some freshmen at the University of Florida are required to start school with an iPod Touch in hand.

Officials recently put “important notice” up red text on the College of Pharmacy website to warn the fall class of 2009 that they must show up for class with an iPod touch or an iPhone.

The 8G model, which will set freshmen back $229 unless they get it with the back-to-school offer, meets the minimum requirement.

The Florida decision comes a couple of months after the University of Missouri journalism school first said they required the Apple device for new students, then backed down on whether the requirement was, uh, really a requirement  or simply recommended after criticism that they were pushing Apple products and bumping up student expenses.

You call yourself a Journalist. Where is the story. Why are they asking students to purchase an iPod.

    Another worthless screenscraper Blogger

I don’t see why they are required to buy an iPod Touch. I mean I’d love to have one in the name of higher education, but still.

[...] Touch – the new laptop July 2, 2009 Journalism school first, now a pharma school. Wonder when this requirement will make its way to pre-school: Some freshmen at the University of Florida are required to start school with an iPod Touch in [...]

This is ridiculous. Completely, utterly ridiculous. My hunch is that it’s tied in with podcasts of lectures or supplemental texbook materials. iTunesU fucking sucks.

And you “why”, are oh, wait, a coward anonymous poster. But thanks for your input.

There was no info about how the iPod touches would be used on the website and no immediate contact information — it was a judgment call to get the news out rather than wait to see if they would be forthcoming with more details once the contact person was ferreted out and responded.

Second Matt’s hunch about supplemental material.. it’s the college of Pharmacy, it may be like the med school we wrote about where it’s loaded with medical software to save students lugging around giant textbooks… http://cultofmac.com/med-school-equips-students-with-ipod-touch/5511

Could be they require Epocrates RX in a handheld.
