Add Google to the list of companies planning an ebook service. The Internet giant’s Google Editions service could be up and running as early as June, the Mountain View, Calif. company told publishers Tuesday. Google would compete with Apple, Amazon and Barnes & Noble for the growing audience of electronic readers.

Unlike its competitors, Google Editions would be available from any Web browser. Apple ties its iBook library to the iPad and iPhone while Amazon has its Kindle reader.

Also different from other ebook services, Google Editions could be sold through other websites, rather than requiring buyers visit company-run sites, such as Amazon.com or iTunes, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Still unclear is how Google will price ebooks available through its Google Editions. The Apple rival could adopt the “agency” model promoted by the Cupertino, Calif. iPad maker or embrace one more akin to Amazon.

In a related development, Apple is reportedly upset over an agreement from the Seattle-based online bookseller. The agreement forbids publishers signed up for the Kindle service to also release a comparable ebook product for another platform, such as the iPad.
