What’s at the top of most kid’s lists to Santa this Christmas season? It’s not a Red Rider BB Gun, or an Xbox 360, or some sort of transforming Killbot. It’s an Apple iPad, at least according to the latest survey by the Nielsen Company.

The statistics are a little misleading without understanding the Nielsen survey’s methodology, however. Essentially, Nielsen rounded up a roomful of tykes between the ages of six and twelve and presented them with a list of gadgets, and asked them to say which one they would like to have over the next six months.

31% of kids polled this way answered an iPad, but since many kids already owned a lot of the objects on the list — the Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and DS, PSP and iPod Touch have been available for years, and a lot of kids already own them — the iPad’s scores might have been artificially boosted.

Additionally, since the kids were forced to pick from a list of defined list, it’s possible there are items not on that list that they’d like even more, such as a subscription to the Economist.

Still, the results seem pretty clear that if you’re ready to play Daddy Warbucks this year and put an iPad under the tree for your kids on Christmas morning, they’re not about to smash it over your heads.
