Motorola Passes Apple In Brand Loyalty Among Men

More men currently profess loyalty to Motorola than iPhone-maker Apple, according to a brand survey. The figures are the first clear indication of the impact of the Motorola-made iPhone rival Droid and the ad bashing between AT&T and Verizon.
After peaking at 48.1 for the month of November, Apple dropped to 22 last week, according to brand research firm YouGov. Motorola, which peaked at 32.3 this month, finished last week with a 29.3 score in the company’s BrandIndex. Study results range from -100 to 100 based on weekday interviews with 5,000 people.
The struggle between Motorola and Apple did have a clear loser: BlackBerry. The Research in Motion smartphone “has withered under all the Droid/iPhone marketing hype,” YouGov announced Tuesday.
Despite the advertising slugfest between rival carriers AT&T (which currently has an exclusive contract for the iPhone) and Verizon (which released the Motorola-made Android 2.0-based Droid and ads slamming the iPhone and AT&T) the Schaumburg, IL-based handset maker “has seen its brand loyalty unaffected,” according to the group.

The study has a margin of error of +/- 2 percent.
The company believes both Motorola and Verizon are receiving a brand bounce while AT&T is sinking among the 18- to 34-year old target demographic. Between Oct. 18 (when Verizon launched the Droid ads) and Nov. 6 (when the Droid began sales) Verizon brand perception rose from 8.3 to 24.2 on the BrandIndex. By comparison, AT&T brand perception fell from 1.4 to -2.4 during the same period, according to YouGov.

I too, was once a loyal Motorola fanboy. While this legendary company has long-produced reliable hardware and even elegant hardware designs, the software always has been AWFUL. Worse, the company offered no Address Book sync support for Mac owners.
Sadly, I cannot envision a return to Motorola cell phones after my past, frustrating experiences with their products, and my new satisfying experiences with the iPhone. Go Apple!

Pu-lease. 84.2% of statistics are fabricated.

Onslaught’s tongue may be embedded in his cheek, but in this case he appears to be correct.
Any statistical anomaly like this would be tossed by most statisticians. Whether it’s the sudden rise or drop of 20 points for Apple, or the 10-point change for Motorola, it just looks unreliable. All the sudden changes tell me it’s difficult to reproduce the results. This is a big clue that there is something wrong with the methodology.
Some might claim it’s due to the new Verizon ads – very effective. But the ad is about their service, not handsets. I have doubts that many people connect Motorola with Verizon, though I wouldn’t be surprised if it affected Apple numbers, with the iPhone is so closely linked to AT&T.
I wouldn’t get excited about any of these numbers. They’re just not robust enough to take seriously.

How can you measure loyalty?
If by that you mean a returning customer, the iPhone and Droid are pretty new to have returning customers, you will at least need 10 years to see how many came back to buy another product.
Plus, I do not think there are more loyal customer’s than Apple where it was going to go bankrupt and they turned it into one of the most profitable successful technology company

This is hard to believe and seems unlikely to hold if it is true once these young guys actually switch to a Droid and find out they can’t play games due to the lack of addressable storage. The app storage problem is going to be an enormous problem for Android.

I have a Droid…3 weeks now…and its an awesome device. Amazed at what it can do…and it keeps surprising me. Awesome apps like Locale…automatically turn on/off WiFi, Blue Tooth, change ringer settings and wallpapers based on where I am without any user interaction at all. Even a Flashlight app that uses Droid’s camera flash. Not to mention the Google Maps NAV…..
Happy with Droid and Happy with Verizon.

i have never heard of this company and there’s no information about where and how these numbers were created, plus the use of words like ‘believes’ which make me less inclined to really give the numbers much faith. One could also use the same numbers to say that young men of a particular age group are more likely to jump on the bandwagon of whatever is new or shiny looking. Regardless of brand. so they get the Droid now and in 3 months when Apple announces a new and shiny tablet they will be lining up to get that.

It shows DAILY change in royalty. What’s their sample size? Who changes their opinion like this every day?
Even if this is true, which is highly unlikely (because iPhone is rated best consumer and business smartphone by JD Powers this year), too bad this is before the Motorola Droid users realize that they are free to install only about 200MB of apps (compared to up to storage limit about 32GB on iPhone), and that they have to install an app to kill background tasks on Motorola android phones because those phones are minimal spec things originally designed as cheap windows mobiles phones.
When the Motorola users want to switch to iPhone, they won’t be happy to find out that the Verizon contract termination fee is now $350. (Verizon would not have raised the termination fee if no one is leaving for the iPhone).

Silly article. Who gives a crap about owner loyalty when iPhone outsells Droid about a zillion to one? In other words, you’re saying that the two guys who own Droids are happier than the millions who own iPhones? LOL
