Journalists Cover Microsoft, Using Macs

It’s not an easy time for Microsoft — with Steve Ballmer having to field questions about being “buffoons” and an “evil empire”  at the shareholder’s meeting (.doc) — so when they get together “the world’s most influential technology pundits and online writers” (nb: we weren’t invited) for Mobius to discuss super-secret mobile tech you’d think [...]

Review: Voices Is Today’s Best Thing Ever, Grab It Now While It’s Cheap

New on the App Store is Voices from the clever folk at Tap Tap Tap. You can guess what it does.

Open it up, pick a silly voice. Helium is pretty silly. A microphone appears and the app even clears your throat for you (try it, you’ll see what I mean). Now speak your brains, and [...]

Review: Sony Walkman S540 Series Video MP3 Player

Press releases, you will hardly be surprised to hear, are rarely very interesting. But one arrived in my inbox a couple of weeks ago that made me double-take.
“Sony’s S Series Walkman,” it chattered, “is a serious challenger to the iPod Nano.” Gosh, really? Perhaps the Cult had better have a look at one, then, despite [...]

iPhone Weekly Digest: the Return of Edge, the Bonkers Mr.AahH!!, a Great FTP App, and More!

Left: FTP On The Go; right: the wonderful Mr.AahH!!

Left: FTP On The Go; right: the wonderful Mr.AahH!!

It’s Friday and it’s time for our weekly digest of tiny iPhone reviews, courtesy of iPhoneTiny.com, with some extra commentary exclusive to Cult of Mac.

Under review this week: Edge by Mobigame, Concertimatic, Juiced, Formula 1 Live Racing Free, Dude, FTP On The Go, Mr.AahH!!, Pinch n Pop!, iSplume, Edge by Mobigame Lite. As always, all id.gd links are to the relevant App Store page.

APP OF THE WEEK

Edge: it's back, it's brilliant, it's not been reviewed here before, and it's the Cult of Mac App of the Week!

Edge: it's back, it's brilliant, it's not been reviewed here before, and it's the Cult of Mac App of the Week!

Edge by Mobigame: Marble Madness (ish) in cubes, with more depth & polish. Challenging, playable & brilliant. 5/5 $4.99 http://is.gd/46ojD

Concertimatic: US app for finding local concerts based on iPod tracks. Good UI but limited settings. 2/5 $0.99 http://is.gd/3YGTo

Juiced: Pretty battery reader with real-time estimates on rotate. Would make a good clock. Throwaway as it is. 2/5 $0.99 http://is.gd/3YHww

Formula 1 Live Racing Free: F1 news and stats app with live race positions. Clunky UI and slow start-up. 3/5 Free http://is.gd/3YJep

Dude: Mildly amusing collection of ‘dude’ recordings and associated traffic-sign-like images/definitions. 2/5 $0.99 http://is.gd/3YK3H

FTP On The Go: Capable app for accessing FTP servers and making minor edits to files. Built-in browser. 4/5 $6.99 http://is.gd/433bR

Mr.AahH!!: Very silly, very addictive one-finger game, guiding a rope-swinging guy to his non-doom. 5/5 $0.99 http://is.gd/433jX

Pinch n Pop!: Pinch-based colour-match game, like a simplified cartoonish Eliss crossed with Puzzle Bobble. 3/5 $0.99 http://is.gd/459At

iSplume: Fairly playable ‘Puzzle Bobble with tilt-based gravity’, but lacks sound and any real challenge. 2/5 Free http://is.gd/46nR3

Edge by Mobigame Lite: A handful of levels and music tracks from the isometric time-attack iPod classic. 4/5 Free http://is.gd/46oaR

Bit of a scrap this week for first place. FTP On The Go is certainly the star non-game product reviewed—a surprisingly powerful tool for web designers on the go. In the world of games, Mr.AahH!! would have got the top prize any other week. Its compulsive single-prod gameplay is really fun and the game’s fantastic value at a buck. Top of the tree, however, is Edge by Mobigame, which returns to the store after trademark battles. Apple reckoned it was one of the App Store’s top 30 games a while back, but I don’t entirely agree—it’s one of the top ten.

Edge is great– read so much about it and it lives up to the hype.
