A New Kind Of Heist: Six Apps For Free

Those crazy MacHeisters are at it again, and this time the deal is even harder to resist.
The first ever MacHeist Nano won’t cost you a penny. You can download, without charge, fully licensed copies of ShoveBox, WriteRoom, Twitterific, TinyGrab, and Hordes of Orcs. If 500,000 people take part (which I think is a pretty safe [...]

Getting More iPhone Home Screens – And Keeping Them

A couple of weeks back, I wrote Temporarily Get More iPhone Home Screens Via Cunning Bug Exploit, but had heard staying away from the iTunes Applications tab within my iPhone was probably a Very Good Idea. Reader Larry Pressnell noted that since the most recent iTunes update, his extra screens have been accessible in iTunes.

Cult of Mac Favorite: MobileStacks Is the Best Reason To Jailbreak. Period.

I really like Stacks on my Mac. Stacks makes it fast and easy to find files, folders and apps right from the Dock. It makes managing a Mac pretty slick with all sorts of little UI tricks. That’s why I recently gave MobileStack a go on my jailbroken iPhone.
I must say that it lives up to the [...]

Gallery: Behind the Scenes From Two Classic Apple TV Ads

Is this Steve Jobs driving a tank in a classic Apple TV spot from the late 1990s? That was the rumor at the time: Jobs was making cameos in Apple commercials.
Ken Segall, the TBWA ad man responsible for naming the iMac and Think Different, reveals the truth after the jump. He also shares some rare [...]

iPhone OS 2.0.1 Arrives… Three Weeks Late

iphone201update.png

As readers of this blog know, we’ve been a bit disappointed in Apple’s July 11 launches, from the mangled mess that is Mobile Me to the crashtacular iPhone OS 2.0 to the absurdly constrained supplies of iPhone 3Gs.

Fortunately, Apple might be turning the corner, at least on the iPhone OS, which shipped in a highly unstable form. Today, effective immediately, Apple has launched a software update for iPhone that promises to deliver, and here I quote, “bug fixes.” All that in a 249-megabyte download. That’s a lot of bugs, folks. I’d love to know how it affects your iPhone and iPod touch experience — particularly as it pertains to third-party app stability.

Launch iTunes and hit the update button to make it happen.

Updating firmware now….will report after playing around a little bit.

Ive been waiting for this since I got my iPhone and it crashed around 5 times a day! I finally gave up on installing apps until an update came out! It finally did today! Hopefully I can have a working iPhone now!

Well so far so good. Both the response and backups seem snappier, but who knows; could just be you good ole placebo effect. So far no crashes. Can verify that updates to apps still do not replace the location of the previous icon. You still have to rearrange all icons to the way you had them.

Generally, after an update people claim that everything is speedier — often just in their mind.
But I’m happy to report that this update DOES speed things up, especially the Contacts app (as well as the contacts list within the Phone app). Where before it would freeze for about 5-10 seconds upon opening, it now is scrollable immediately like in version 1. Thank goodness… I don’t have to plan ahead to make a phone call anymore.

web browsing seems speedier through wifi. However, prior to the update my 3g service was spotty at best. I usually downgrade to edge when I don’t need fast data access. After the update I have no service using 3g.

[...] trying to make things right today. First, the company released iPhone OS 2.0.1, which everyone seems to agree fixes virtually everything wrong with the prior release (except cut, copy, and paste, of [...]

Hmm… I didn’t really have too much trouble before. A few crashes but nothing to get upset about. I expected a few growing pains. So far the update seems OK too.
