Microsoft’s My Documents Folder Makes Triumphant Return – On iPad

20100209-mydocuments.jpg

Earlier today, I was reading Infoworld’s article, The iPad questions Apple won’t answer. The first question they listed was “Can you save and transfer documents to the iPad?”, and their assumed answer was “No”; they suggested that the only way to do this would be to open a document from an email message.
I read that [...]

Top 5 Things To Check Out at Macworld 2010

Macworld 2010 opens today. It is the 25th annual gathering of Mac users. That’s right, 25 years!
But thanks to the absence of Apple this year, this “Mecca for Mac Heads” may be the last. So check it out while you can.

The show runs for 5 days. The Expo showfloor opens on Thursday at noon.

Opinion: MacBook, or iMac + iPad?

20100208-imacipad.jpg

The announcement of the iPad has done a lot of things: it’s stoked up excitement in the Mac using community, it’s got a bunch of developers feverishly coding exciting new stuff, and it’s got retailers and cell phone companies the world over drooling over the money they can make from it.
And it’s also somewhat upset [...]

In Depth: 30 Days with the Nexus One

It’s been a month since my review of Google’s “SuperPhone”, the Nexus One. Since that time, we’ve surfed, updated facebook, navigated, called, played endless hands of cribbage and even tried to freeze it to death on a trip to Dayton Ohio. Follow me after the jump to find out does the “SuperPhone” stand the [...]

Inside Jonny Ive’s Design Studio

Documentary film maker Gary Hustwit recently got to interview top Apple designer Jonny Ive for Objectified, a movie he’s making about industrial design.

The interview took place inside Ive’s ultra-secretive design studio near Apple’s campus, which is harder to get into than Fort Knox. This is the first interview I’ve ever heard of taking place inside the studio. Quite a coup for the film. I can’t wait to see it.

In the meantime, I’m dying to know what machines are in the background of this still. I knew the studio was filled with CNC mills and 3D fabricators. Does anyone know what machines are shown in this shot?

Those are Rapid Prototyping machines. They work with CAD files and build full sized plastic models from the drawings.

“Does anyone know what machines are shown in this shot?”

Yes. It is called a “flux capacitor”. It allows you to travel into the future.

The machines in the shot are just what you expected, CNC mills. There is a granite surface plate, and a Mantis magnifyer over his left shoulder. Nothing out of the ordinary for a machine shop.

In the far-rear right, you can see a lathe too. (I think).

First commenter is right, although there are machines that can do the same thing with metal. VERY cool toys.

I think BeachDude is right, the machines tot the left appear to be CNC mills. Also agree that the machine in the far right is most likely a CNC lathe. Those are quite handy but not extremely rare to find in a workshop.

I definetely have to check out that movie though, a look inside Ive’s workshop has to be every industrial designer’s ultimate fantasy ;)

The big machines on the left are not rapid plastic prototyping but water jet cutters… I know cuz I work one :) You can see a photo here
