Journalists Cover Microsoft, Using Macs

It’s not an easy time for Microsoft — with Steve Ballmer having to field questions about being “buffoons” and an “evil empire”  at the shareholder’s meeting (.doc) — so when they get together “the world’s most influential technology pundits and online writers” (nb: we weren’t invited) for Mobius to discuss super-secret mobile tech you’d think [...]

Review: Voices Is Today’s Best Thing Ever, Grab It Now While It’s Cheap

New on the App Store is Voices from the clever folk at Tap Tap Tap. You can guess what it does.

Open it up, pick a silly voice. Helium is pretty silly. A microphone appears and the app even clears your throat for you (try it, you’ll see what I mean). Now speak your brains, and [...]

Review: Sony Walkman S540 Series Video MP3 Player

Press releases, you will hardly be surprised to hear, are rarely very interesting. But one arrived in my inbox a couple of weeks ago that made me double-take.
“Sony’s S Series Walkman,” it chattered, “is a serious challenger to the iPod Nano.” Gosh, really? Perhaps the Cult had better have a look at one, then, despite [...]

First Unlocked iPhones Selling in Hong Kong?

The first unlocked iPhones may be selling through Apple’s online Store in Hong Kong, according to a report this morning in at a Singapore-based blog. Techgoondu is reporting online shoppers at the Apple web site in Hong Kong are beingn told ““iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation.”

The 8GB is HK$5,400 ($695) and the 16GB is HK$6,200 ($798). Ouch. Shipping is free, and they are supposed to ship “within 24 hours”. Apple’s warranty for the iPhone 3G is local only – “Warranty service is restricted to the country where Apple or its authorized distributors originally sold the iPhone.”

Honk Kong-based carrier Three enjoyed a brief two and a half month exclusivity deal with Apple and recently sweetened its iPhone rate plane to include “free unlimited wifi.”

If HK can, Why US can’t?

I’ve had an iPhone here in Hong Kong since July 19th and was so surprised about a week ago when 3 messaged me letting me know about the free unlimited wifi deal.

The weird thing is that I’m on a 2-year contract so where’s the gain for them? I mean I appreciate it and all but it seems awfully generous. Attracting new users I can understand but ok, I’m not complaining at all, just surprised.

Now, off to find the nearest hotspot. McDonalds is close and they’re hooked up. Cool!

Oh yes, one more thing; only less than a month ago they were selling ‘grey’ iPhones in Mong Kok for $HK8500. Won’t those people be, umm, miffed. Oh well, that’s the free market for ya. =)

It’s been 3 months that in Belgium you may buy an unlocked 8 GB iPhone for 525 Euro. Of course apple don’t sell it directly, but it is indeed unlocked. (http://iphone3g.mobistar.be/fr/iphone3g.cfm)
