Apple Devotes Entire Home Page To Jerome York Obituary

20100318-york.jpg

If ever you needed a sign that Apple was a different kind of technology company, this is it.
What other computer manufacturer would remove its top-selling, hype-inducing, industry-altering new product from the prime spot on its website home page, and replace it with an obituary to an investor?
This is one of those “Here’s to the [...]

Coming Soon: Steve Jobs, the Sitcom

Fake Steve creator Dan Lyons just signed a deal to bring Steve Jobs to another small screen near you.
The half-hour series called “iCon” is billed by the presser as “a savage satire centering on a fictional Silicon Valley CEO whose ego is a study in power and greed.”
Making sure the barbs prick will be the [...]

What’s Next For the iPad? A Tabletop iPad, According to Xerox PARC Circa 1991

Way back in 1991, just as Apple was transitioning from 68k to PowerPC chips, the braniacs at Xerox PARC were predicting it’s entire iPod, iPhone and iPad strategy. And next up for the iPad is a blackboard-sized device.
Nearly 20 years ago, just as personal desktop computers were taking off, researchers at Xerox started thinking about [...]

iPhone App Arms Users With Silent Panic Button

A new app called Silent Bodyguard features a panic button that sends an SOS distress signal with GPS coordinates to potential rescuers without alerting onlookers.
While the $3.99 app, available on iTunes, isn’t the first ICE (in case of emergency) app, this one is backed by Dr. Clint Van Zandt, former FBI chief hostage negotiator and criminal [...]

Cult of Mac – the decorators are in

Some strange things are going to happen to this website over the next few hours as the design is amended. Apologies for the inconvenience.

UPDATE: And we’re done. We hope you like the shiny new design. If you come across any problems with it (as in, “IT’S ALL GONE WRONG!”, not “I wanted it to be blue!”), leave a note in the comments. Also, if you’ve any general feedback about the design, or any ideas about what you’d like to see in future revisions, please let us know.

cool dibs on the old curtains…

I want to put in a request for a new shaved apple-head – maybe a blond dude this time.

Oh wow! I love the design. While the old design was nice, this just made visiting CoM an even nicer experience. Kudos!

Sorry, Daniel – the old head’s staying. It’s all about contrast, see? Well, that and none of the team has a blonde noggin that they’re happy to shave.

Love the Top Stories feature. How about animating the shaved head? Brown to blond to fucshia to blue to pink to brown…

Its not the best i’ve seen of course, but looks a lot better!

It’s like you put new rims on an old truck. wow! Awesome!

@SkookemLukum: Yes, exactly like that, if the truck in question is a 1965 F150, tricked out with a big-block, new custom paint, and a hot blonde standing next to it (http://www.sporttruck.com/featuredvehicles/chevy/0702st_custom_1956_panel_trucks/photo_05.html)

    then you’re spot on.

I guess what I’m saying is: GREAT WORK Craig!

Yeah, the articles surrounding it were beginning to get pretty old, I was kind of seeing “Best Independent Mac Store”, and “Woz Teaches Segway Polo” every time I opened the page, it looks great.

I want it to be blue ;-)

    Lots of grey …

Silver/grey doesn’t distract from other content, and this was a tidy up rather than an entirely new design. However, everything’s way more modular now, and so switching out the various images and colours will be pretty easy if we want to recolour/rework the site in the future.

Bram O.—yup, that was one thing we needed to deal with. That said, I couldn’t let Woz vanish entirely, so I bunged him in the sidebar, along with that article about the boxed Apple II!

Cleaner and leaner – seems faster to load, nice work :)
