Most smartbulbs I’ve tried only let me use my iPhone to change the color of the bulb and to turn it off and on. I’ve never found one bright enough to read by, either, making me wonder if it’s even possible with the current technology.

The Yeelight is my answer: It’s a fantastic, app-controlled, touch-enabled smartlamp that’s colorful enough to set a fun mood while also being bright enough to use for my before-bed reading ritual.

Bottom line, this one’s a winner.

The killer feature isn’t the app, here, although it’s a perfectly functional free download from the App Store. No, what sets the Yeelight apart are the touch controls. I hate fumbling for my iPhone in the middle of the night to turn on a light. With Yeelight, you simply swipe across the top touch-sensitive area and a gentle light will emanate from the smartlamp. No more midnight blindness.

There’s a fantastic sleep timer here, too, which can be activated with a long press on the big on/off button on top. The light will go out after 15 minutes (a length of time that’s configurable in the app), letting you set a mood that won’t overstay its welcome when you fall asleep.

The app controls brightness, color and color temperature, along with a special color-flow mode that turns your Yeelight into a rotating color palette to illuminate your room. Press the smaller button on top and you’ll cycle through the three modes: white light, single color light or color flow.

A smartlamp that lets me obsessively set the color that can also rotate through 16 million different ones is a lovely decorative item, for sure. When I set the Yeelight to bright white and swiped the top touch surface to brighten it up, I was amazed that it was enough to read by. I love reading paper books and hate those crummy small book lights that only spotlight small portions of the page. Yeelight is bright without being blinding, and it let me read long into the night without disturbing my partner.

This is the smartlamp that does it all, and it does it for a fantastic price. Give Yeelight a try today.
