Apple is expanding its presence in Reno Technology Park in Nevada by building a new data center adjacent to its current one. The company filed a permit with Washoe County for “Project Huckleberry,” the codename for the new facilities that will stand next to the current “Project Mills” data center.
“It’s a whole different set of buildings but it looks like it is going to be essentially the same design as Project Mills, only turned perpendicularly to the east,” Trevor Lloyd, senior planner for Washoe County Planning and Development’s Community Services, told Reno Gazette-Journal.
This means there will actually be several small data centers within Project Huckleberry, as is the case with Project Mills. Though development for Project Mills still isn’t complete either, it’s expected to eventually total 14 buildings and a whopping 412,000 square feet. That size will roughly double once the Huckleberry expansion takes place.
Lloyd said he’s “willing to bet that we’ll have a completely approved set of plans by the end of the month” which means Apple should be able to get started with building out Huckleberry pretty soon. Since Project Mills is reportedly reaching its full power capacity already, Apple will likely kick things into gear as quickly as possible.
