When Steve Jobs said yesterday that they were demoting the Mac to just another device, my heart seized up a bit in a bit of premonitory fear of the future. But Steve’s right, as he so often is. The iPhones in our pockets aren’t second class citizens to the desktop. They aren’t miniature, undeveloped computers birthed from the PC and connected by a umbilical cord to iTunes. They’re the most important computer most of us own, and they deserve autonomy and respect.
