AT&T Runs Out of iPhone 4 – Stock Room Ready for iPhone 5? [Updated]

AT&T Runs Out of iPhone 4 – Stock Room Ready for iPhone 5? [Updated]

If you’ve been keeping up with the iPhone 4S/5 speculation recently, any hopes you had that the device would be announced at Steve’s WWDC keynote on Monday will be well and truly crushed by now. But if a new device isn’t right around the corner, why is AT&T running out of the iPhone 4?

If you head on over to the iPhone page on AT&T’s website today, the only black iPhone 4 devices they have to offer are all refurbished; there are no new handsets in stock.

When Apple stock runs out like this it’s usually a very good indication that a product refresh is on its way.

Sure, it could just be coincidence, but would Apple really allow its biggest U.S. carrier to run out of stock on a device that is expected to run until at least September? I’m not so sure…

Of course, this could just be a glitch in AT&T’s system that is ignoring stock of the back iPhone 4, but if you needed a story to keep that new iPhone at WWDC dream alive, this is most definitely it.

What do you think? Are we getting out hopes up over nothing, or is this enough to believe in a new iPhone announcement on Monday?

UPDATE: The black iPhone 4 is now back in stock on the AT&T website.

If you talk about Apple and product announcements, I guess we always allow ourselves to fall into X-mas dreaming.  Incredible to see how people look for indications on new product releases, how they even keep track of prior release dates, just to get an indication of the next one! ;)  Amazing company if you ask me (and YES, I truly hope the 4S or 5 will be announced on Monday – my wife won’t let me play with her iphone 4 for much longer :) )

  • Gadgetgeek25

Maybe because of the iOS 5 announcement? Are they getting ready for iOS 5 stock? Don’t know, but I honestly don’t think it’s for a new phone version.

  • Ptotheresley

    An iPhone5 could be Steve’s “One More Thing…” announcement…

  • Bueller

The iPhone 4 isn’t out of stock at ATT.com. It shows a picture of a white iPhone 4 but when you click on the link you can choose the option to either get black or white with in either 16gb or 32gb flavors…They just chose to condense thing on the page I guess….Would love to see a new iPhone at WWDC still, wanna get my wife the newest version when it comes out :)

  • Connor O’Neill

iOS is an operating system, not a device!

  • Fierbiz

This should be taken down, it’s completely incorrect. You can get any phone you want.

  • Bill8993

Completely bogus. Is Bell intentionally trying to mislead people or is he stupid? Pick one.

  • Charley

iPhone 4 black, white, 16/32gb, new (not refurb) are both available at AT&T online store.  False alarm.

  • Guest

    Dear Ignorant f**k,
Bell saw what he saw and made a speculation. He said it may be “a glitch in AT&T’s system”, which turns out it probably was.
                       Sincerely,
                   Common Sense

P.S. I know you’ll probably never see this Guest

When reporting news its best to due some investigating, especially when all you have to do is click your mouse a couple more times to find the answer…its not like he was cracking an international conspiracy, this is just poor reporting.  If Bell keeps reporting news in this way I think he is seeing the top of his career.

  • Bill8993

“Made a speculation”? Riiiiiiiight. No speculation required. It took 2 seconds to hit the link and see that it was available in black. Like I said, pick one.

  • Altopod

My mother just picked up an iPhone4 here in Canada for the blowout price of $69.  Looks like something is afoot.

  • KillianBell

Actually, it is you that is mislead. If you read the article properly, it clearly states “the only black iPhone 4 devices they have to offer are all refurbished.”

There are no NEW black iPhone 4s for sale, therefore they are out of stock of NEW devices. That was the case at the time of writing this story, and that is still the case at the time of writing this comment. Why not click the link and check again?

  • KillianBell

Only refurbished devices are available in black – as the article states. New black devices are out of stock.

  • Bob

It’s great that you are so certain.  You also happen to be wrogn.

  • Bob

    Nope.

  • 8applehome

I picked up a white iPhone 4 for my wife for $64 (tax incl) at Telus.  Of course that’s because I got a $100 off coupon and a 3 year plan.

  • Bill8993

This is not rocket science. Go to the iPhone page. There are pics of white iPhones but it doesn’t say white iPhones. Hit the link(s) about plan info. You there select white or black.

  • Humdrum

    Dude, lots of typos… ?_?

     I still have hope!!!

  • Bill8993

The UPDATE is a bogus CYA. The black was never unavailable. Bell states: “That was the case at the time of writing this story, and that is still the case at the time of writing this comment. Why not click the link and check again?” But nice try.

  • Bill8993

The UPDATE is disingenuous. The black iPhones were never out of stock as that statement would have readers believe.
Bell stated: “That was the case at the time of writing this story, and that is still the case at the time of writing this comment. Why not click the link and check again?”

  • broseph23

You’re such a lowlife fuck. Obviously can’t admit being wrong. This article os false and dumb. There are plenty in stock. Seriously bloggers need to put more effort into doing their hw a research before posting.

  • Bob

    >UPDATE: The black iPhone 4 is now back in stock on the AT&T website.

Bullshit.  And I thought Brownlee was bad.

  • CharliK

It’s not BS per se but simply that Killan and/or his sources don’t understand how channels work. Best Buy, ATT etc do large batch orders from Apple for iphones and ipads. They try to guess how many they need and how fast they will sell. Sometimes they  screw up.

That’s all this was. A fluke in the system where they under guessed how fast the stock would sell out and didn’t place their new order a few days earlier

  • CharliK

“Sure, it could just be coincidence, but would Apple really allow its biggest U.S. carrier to run out of stock on a device that is expected to run until at least September? I’m not so sure…”

Perhaps calling you stupid was  a bit harsh but after all this time for you to make a comment like the above shows that you aren’t as informed as you want folks to think.

I’m not a writer on a tech blog and I know how the game works with parties like Apple and ATT. So why didn’t you.

  • CharliK

Could be. But won’t be. Apple is sticking by their ‘software only’ for WWDC. That’s what it was created for and Steve is taking it back to those roots. Disconnecting the iphone hardware from that schedule so they aren’t forced to meet deadlines they perhaps cant. Say due to a tragic disaster in a country where many of the components are made

  • CharliK

And yet. It is an operating system that is preloaded on the devices. So Gadget’s comment is actually valid. Apple won’t allow iOS5 loaded phones to sell before they announce the software but at the same time once they do they want such phones in the channels. So if a company ran out on the right timing they might hold back a new shipment a couple of days (or ship only part of the order right away and hold the rest) to achieve that end

  • Bob

Nope, it was clear all along that what he didn’t know how to do was to navigate ATT’s (rather simple) order pages.

Although he finally figured it out (after repeated denials that he had it wrong), he has no incentive to remove the linkbait headline, because that’s how this bullshit website works.

I stand by my analysis: Bullshit.

  • cheesy11

hmm still dont believe this so im going to go ahead and get my iphone 4

  • Nic

    this is a crap article…..not true at all….simple research bud…simple research…..

  • Bob

I see that my orignal comment has been removed.  More bullshit from a bullshit website.

  • Yasaswy Nagavolu

Super stupid article.. even if a new iPhone comes up iPhone 3GS are the ones needed to checked for scarcity coz iPhone 4 will get 100$ discount price and will not seize to exist until the next iPhone refresh..

  • YourComments

Cult of Mac, do you guys have any clue of how ugly comments show on the iPhone 4 Safari?

You guys should look at it one day and work on a fix.

  • bub

I wouldn’t trust any stock information to be accurate on AT&T’s website.  I placed an order for a white 32gb model 2 weeks ago and it showed as in stock then, and since, yet I had to cancel my order on Thursday because even AT&T did not know when, or if, they would be getting any back in stock.  So, the AT&T website is not accurate as to stock.

  • Steve

    Who gives a shit?

  • Guest

It allows you to select white or black….. Picture is of a white phone until you pick BLACK and click PROCEED.

  • Real Guy

    Get a life people.
